New Zealand has a Muslim community of approximately 1.5 percent of the population per the 2018 census, numbering roughly 75,000 people. The community is highly diverse, with origins in Fijian-Indian, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Afghan, Iraqi, Iranian, Turkish, Somali, Egyptian, and Bosnian backgrounds, alongside a smaller native New Zealand convert population including a notable Māori convert contingent. The earliest documented Muslim presence in New Zealand dates to the 1850s; the first organized congregational prayer is recorded in 1900. The Mosque of Auckland (Ponsonby Mosque), established in 1979, was the first purpose-built mosque in New Zealand. The Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, established in 1985, was the site of the March 2019 attack that resulted in the deaths of 51 worshippers, an event that profoundly affected the New Zealand Muslim community and led to significant national legal reforms; the mosque was rebuilt and continues as a major congregational center. The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) is the principal national umbrella body. eSalah uses MWL default; Karachi method is alternate.
