Nicaragua has a small Muslim community estimated at less than 0.1 percent of the population, numbering approximately 1,500 to 3,500 adherents. The community is composed primarily of Levantine Arab descendants (Palestinian, Lebanese, and Syrian) who migrated in the early to mid-twentieth century, more recent Pakistani residents, and a growing native Nicaraguan convert population. The community is concentrated in Managua and Granada. The Centro Cultural Islámico de Nicaragua in Managua, established in the 1990s, operates the country's principal mosque. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support a formal Islamic school within Nicaragua. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Nicaragua, consistent with Central American regional practice; the ISNA method is offered as an alternate given proximity to and educational ties with the United States. The community maintains ongoing links with Honduran, Costa Rican, Mexican, and Floridian Muslim networks for religious resources, halal certification, and Eid coordination, and most observant residents conduct major religious life-cycle events in coordination with these regional Muslim networks.
