Niger is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 99 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya and Qadiriyya Sufi presence. The community is composed of multiple ethnic groups including the Hausa (the largest), Zarma-Songhai, Fulani (Pulaar/Fulbe), Tuareg, Kanuri, and Toubou, all of whom have been Islamized through the centuries-long expansion of trans-Saharan Islamic networks linked to the empires of Songhai, Bornu, and the Sokoto Caliphate. The Grande Mosquée de Niamey, opened in 1973 with Libyan support, is the largest mosque in the country and the principal congregational center of the capital. The historic mosque in Agadez, with its distinctive Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick minaret rebuilt in 1844 on a 16th-century foundation, is part of the Old Town of Agadez UNESCO World Heritage site. The Association Islamique du Niger and the Conseil Islamique du Niger are among the principal national bodies. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Niger, appropriate for the West African Maliki-Sahelian tradition; the Algerian and Egyptian methods are offered as regionally-tested alternates.
