Norway has a Muslim community of approximately 4.4 percent of the population, or roughly 240,000 people, drawn from Pakistani (the largest single group, with a community established since the 1970s and concentrated in Oslo), Somali, Iraqi, Iranian, Bosnian, Turkish, Moroccan, Afghan, and Syrian backgrounds. The community is concentrated in Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, and Drammen. The World Islamic Mission Mosque in Oslo (Jamia Masjid), opened in 1995, is the largest in the country and the principal Barelvi mosque; the Islamic Cultural Centre in Oslo and the Rabita Mosque represent diverse currents. The Islamic Council of Norway (Islamsk Råd Norge — IRN) is the umbrella body for the registered Muslim communities. There is no state-recognized established religious authority equivalent to the Lutheran Church (which itself was disestablished in 2012). eSalah uses the WIM-Oslo (World Islamic Mission, Oslo) custom timetable parameters as the default for Norwegian cities, which apply high-latitude rules consistent with the country's geographic position. The Karachi method is offered as an alternate given the Pakistani-Hanafi composition of much of the community.
