Panama has a small but historically established Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.7 percent of the population, numbering roughly 25,000 to 30,000 adherents. The community is composed of Levantine Arab descendants (predominantly Lebanese and Palestinian, with a notable Druze component) who migrated in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, South Asian (predominantly Indian Muslim and Pakistani) traders established in Colón since the early twentieth century in connection with the Panama Canal commercial corridor, more recent migrants from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and a growing native Panamanian convert population. The Centro Cultural Islámico de Colón (the Mosque of Colón), established in the early twentieth century in a community with deep roots in the canal-zone trade economy, is among the oldest continuously functioning mosques in Central and Latin America. The Centro Cultural Islámico de Panamá in Panama City and the Mezquita Jama in David serve as principal congregational centers. The community is predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school given its South Asian heritage. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Panama.
