Paraguay has a Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.1 percent of the population, numbering roughly 5,000 to 10,000 adherents. The community is concentrated in the so-called Tri-Border Area (Ciudad del Este on the border with Brazilian Foz do Iguaçu and Argentine Puerto Iguazú), where a substantial Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian commercial community has been established since the mid-twentieth century, alongside smaller communities in Asunción and Encarnación. The community is composed predominantly of Levantine Arab descendants and a smaller native Paraguayan convert population. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni, with a notable Twelver Shia minority of Lebanese descent. The Mosque of Profeta Muhammad in Ciudad del Este (Mezquita Profeta Muhammad), opened in the 1980s, is the principal congregational center for the Tri-Border community; smaller mosques operate in Asunción and Encarnación. There is no state Islamic authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Paraguay, consistent with broader Latin American practice. The community maintains close cross-border links with the Foz do Iguaçu mosque (the largest Sunni mosque in southern Brazil) and the broader Argentine Muslim community.
