The Philippines has a Muslim community of approximately 6.4 percent of the population per the 2020 census, numbering roughly 7 million people, predominantly concentrated in the southern island of Mindanao, the Sulu Archipelago, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), formally established in 2019 under a peace settlement with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The community comprises 13 ethnolinguistic Muslim groups collectively known as the Bangsamoro people, the largest of which are the Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausug, Sama-Bajau, and Yakan. Islam arrived in the southern Philippines through Arab and Malay traders from the late 13th century onward; the Sheikh Karim al-Makhdum Mosque on Simunul Island in Tawi-Tawi, traditionally dated to 1380, is the oldest mosque in the Philippines. The Grand Mosque of Cotabato City (Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid), opened in 2011 with Bruneian funding, is the largest in the country. The Bangsamoro Darul Ifta and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos coordinate religious affairs. eSalah uses MWL default; Kemenag-Indonesia is alternate.
