Portugal has a Muslim community of approximately 0.5 to 0.7 percent of the population, numbering roughly 65,000 to 75,000 adherents. The community is composed predominantly of post-1975 returnees from the former Portuguese colonies in Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and Angola (a substantial portion of Indo-Portuguese Sunni and Khoja Ismaili origin from Mozambique who arrived in Portugal as part of the Retornados population), more recent migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Senegal, Morocco, and Guinea-Conakry, alongside a smaller native Portuguese convert population. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi (for the Indo-Portuguese contingent) and Shafi'i and Maliki schools. The Lisbon Central Mosque (Mesquita Central de Lisboa), opened in 1985 in the Praça de Espanha, is the principal congregational center for Portuguese Sunni Muslims; the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon, opened in 1998, serves the Khoja Ismaili community. The Comunidade Islâmica de Lisboa is the principal Sunni national umbrella body. eSalah uses the Lisboa method (custom angle parameters published in coordination with the local mosque), the corrected default per A.5.
