Puerto Rico has a Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.4 to 0.5 percent of the population, numbering roughly 5,000 to 8,000 adherents. The community is composed of Levantine Arab descendants (predominantly Palestinian, with Lebanese and Syrian components) who migrated in the early to mid-twentieth century and built a substantial business community in San Juan and Ponce, more recent Pakistani residents, a notable native Puerto Rican convert population including a substantial Spanish-speaking convert contingent, and a smaller community of African American Muslims who have migrated from the U.S. mainland. The Centro Islámico de Puerto Rico in Vega Alta operates the principal masjid in the territory; smaller mosques operate in San Juan, Ponce, and Mayagüez. There is no state Islamic authority specific to Puerto Rico. eSalah uses the ISNA method as the default for Puerto Rican cities given the territory's political integration with the United States, with the Muslim World League method offered as an alternate. The community maintains close ties with the larger Florida and New York Spanish-speaking Muslim networks, especially LADO (Latin American Dawah Organization) and similar groups.
