Qatar is a Muslim-majority country in which Islam is the state religion under the constitution. Approximately 65 to 67 percent of the total population is Muslim when including expatriates, with a higher figure (95 to 100 percent) among Qatari citizens. The Qatari Sunni majority follows the Hanbali school predominantly (consistent with the country's Salafi-leaning state religious establishment), with a substantial Twelver Shia minority of roughly 5 to 15 percent of citizens. The Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque (Qatar State Mosque), opened in 2011 as the largest mosque in the country, can accommodate over 30,000 worshippers and is named for the eighteenth-century scholar associated with the foundation of the Salafi movement, reflecting the historical religious orientation of the state. The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs oversees the country's mosque network and certifies imams. The Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University) is a major contemporary scholarly center. eSalah uses the Qatar Awqaf method (Fajr 18°, Isha 90 minutes after Maghrib) for Qatari cities, the official Ministry-published parameters distinct from the broader Gulf-90 default.
