Senegal is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 96 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school. The country has one of the most distinctive and influential Sufi religious landscapes in the Muslim world: approximately 90 percent of Senegalese Muslims are affiliated with one of the major Sufi turuq, principally the Tijaniyya (the largest), the Mouridiyya (founded by the nineteenth-century Senegalese saint and reformer Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba), and the Qadiriyya. The Mouridiyya order is centered on the holy city of Touba, where the Great Mosque of Touba (Magal of Touba) is the burial place of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and the destination of the annual Magal pilgrimage that draws several million participants — among the largest religious gatherings in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Tivaouane and Médina Baye Tijaniyya centers, the Médina Gounass Tijaniyya, and the Layene communities anchor other major Sufi networks. The Grand Mosque of Dakar serves as the principal urban congregational center. The Conseil Supérieur Islamique du Sénégal coordinates religious affairs. eSalah uses MWL default; Algerian method alternate.
