The Seychelles has a Muslim community of approximately 1.6 to 2.4 percent of the population, numbering roughly 1,500 to 2,000 adherents in an archipelago of approximately 100,000. The community is composed of three principal groups: descendants of South Asian (Gujarati and Pakistani) traders who settled during the colonial period, descendants of Yemeni and Hadhrami Arab merchants who settled along the Indian Ocean trade routes, and a smaller native Seychellois convert population. The community is concentrated in Victoria on the main island of Mahé. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni, with the Hanafi school predominant given the South Asian heritage and the Shafi'i school among the Yemeni-origin community. The Mosque of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum in Victoria, opened in 2014 with UAE funding, is the principal congregational mosque of the country. The Islamic Society of Seychelles is the registered national umbrella body. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for the Seychelles, consistent with Indian Ocean regional practice; the Karachi method is offered as an alternate given the South Asian heritage of much of the community.
