Sierra Leone has a Muslim community of approximately 78 percent of the population per the 2015 census, numbering roughly 6 million people, making it a Muslim-majority country and one of only a handful of West African states to have peacefully alternated between Muslim and Christian heads of state without sectarian tension. The community is composed of multiple ethnic groups including the Mandinka, Susu, Fula (Pulaar), and Temne, all of whom have been Islamized through the centuries-long expansion of trans-Saharan and Senegambian Islamic networks. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Maliki school with a strong Tijaniyya and Qadiriyya Sufi presence; there is also a substantial Ahmadiyya community of approximately 600,000 (the Ahmadiyya having been established in Sierra Leone since 1937). The Freetown Central Mosque and the Foulah Town Mosque (built in 1820 by Liberian-Sierra Leonean returnees, including the Fulani-Liberian Muslim notable Mohammed Sanusi) are among the oldest in the country. The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone played a significant role in the 2002 peace settlement after the civil war. eSalah uses MWL default.
