Somalia is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 99.8 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school with a deeply rooted Sufi tradition centered on the Qadiriyya, Ahmadiyya (Idrisiyya, distinct from the messianic Ahmadiyya movement), and Salihiyya orders. The Federal Government's constitution establishes Islam as the state religion. Somalis trace their Islamic heritage to the seventh and eighth centuries through the early Arab and Persian Indian Ocean networks; the city of Zeila in the northwest was a major medieval Islamic trading hub and is associated with several saintly tombs and historic mosques. The Mosque of Two Mihrabs (Masjid al-Qiblatayn) in Zeila, traditionally dated to the early Islamic period, is among the oldest mosques in East Africa. The Mogadishu Cathedral Mosque (Issa Beleed Mosque) and the Fakr ad-Din Mosque (1269) are the principal historical congregational centers. The Banadir Mosque is the oldest functioning mosque in Mogadishu. The Federal Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs oversees mosque administration. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Somalia, consistent with East African and Yemeni Shafi'i practice.
