Mogadishu, on the Indian Ocean coast of the Horn of Africa, has been a Muslim port-city since at least the tenth century, named in early Arabic geographical sources as one of the principal trading entrepots of the Banadir coast. The Mosque of Fakhr al-Din, built in 1269 in the Hamarweyne quarter, is the oldest surviving mosque in the city and a significant monument of the Indian Ocean Shafi'i tradition, while the Arba'a Rukun Mosque, traditionally dated to 1269, attests to the same medieval phase. Travelers including Ibn Battuta, who visited in 1331, recorded a city of well-organized Shafi'i jurisprudence and active Indian Ocean commerce linking East Africa to Arabia, India, and beyond. Despite the deep damage of the post-1991 conflict, Mogadishu's mosques have been progressively rebuilt and Friday gatherings, Ramadan tarawih, and Quran-school networks continue to be central to civic life across the rebuilding city.
