Spain has a Muslim community of approximately 4.5 percent of the population, or roughly 2.1 million people, drawn predominantly from Moroccan migrant origin (the largest single group), with substantial communities of Senegalese, Pakistani, Algerian, Bangladeshi, and Syrian background, and a notable native Spanish convert population. The community is concentrated in Catalonia, Madrid, Andalusia, the Valencian Community, and Murcia. Spain holds extraordinary historical importance in global Islamic civilization as the seat of Al-Andalus from 711 to 1492; the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (Mezquita-Catedral), founded by Abd al-Rahman I in 785 CE, is one of the most architecturally significant Islamic monuments in world history, and the Alhambra in Granada, completed under the Nasrid dynasty in the fourteenth century, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. After centuries of expulsion and exclusion, Islamic religious freedom was restored under the 1978 constitution and codified in the 1992 Acuerdo de Cooperación. The Comisión Islámica de España (CIE) is the principal representative body. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Spain.
