Sri Lanka has a Muslim community of approximately 9.7 percent of the population per the 2012 census, numbering roughly 2 million people, comprising the third-largest religious community in the country. The community is composed of three principal groups: the Sri Lankan Moors (the largest, descendants of Arab traders who settled along the coast from at least the eighth century onward, traditionally Tamil-speaking but with a distinctive mixed Arab-South Indian heritage), the Sri Lankan Malays (descendants of soldiers and exiles from the Dutch East Indies), and the Indian Moors (more recent migrants of Tamil and Gujarati origin). The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Shafi'i school, reflecting both Arab and Southeast Asian heritage. The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque) in Pettah, Colombo, built in 1908 by Saleh Lebbe Marikar in a striking Indo-Saracenic style with red and white striped masonry, is among the most architecturally distinctive mosques in South Asia. The All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) is the principal national Sunni body. eSalah uses the MWL default for Sri Lanka.
