Suriname has a Muslim community of approximately 13.9 percent of the population per the 2012 census, numbering roughly 78,000 people, the largest Muslim share of any non-Muslim-majority country in mainland South America (alongside Guyana). The community is composed predominantly of two distinct groups: Indo-Surinamese Muslims (descendants of Indian indentured laborers brought to Dutch Guiana between 1873 and 1916, of whom approximately 16 percent were Muslim, predominantly Sunni Hanafi from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) and Javanese Muslims (descendants of indentured laborers brought from the Dutch East Indies between 1890 and 1939, predominantly Sunni Shafi'i). The community is concentrated in Paramaribo, Wanica, and Nickerie. The Keizerstraat Mosque (Mosque Keizerstraat) in Paramaribo, originally built in 1929 and rebuilt subsequently, is among the oldest mosques in the country and notable for standing adjacent to the Nieuwe Synagoge in a striking architectural example of religious coexistence. The Surinaamse Moeslim Associatie (SMA) and the Surinaamse Islamitische Vereniging (SIV) are major national bodies. eSalah uses Karachi.
