Sweden has a Muslim community of approximately 8 percent of the population, or roughly 800,000 to 850,000 people, drawn predominantly from Iraqi (the largest single group, established since the 1980s and especially after 2003), Iranian, Bosnian, Somali, Syrian, Lebanese, Turkish, Afghan, Kurdish, and Pakistani backgrounds. The community is concentrated in the Stockholm, Gothenburg (Göteborg), and Malmö metropolitan areas. The Stockholm Mosque on Kapellgränd, opened in 2000 on the site of the former electricity station, is the principal Sunni mosque in the capital and the largest in Sweden; the Malmö Mosque, opened in 1984 and rebuilt after a 2003 arson, was the first purpose-built mosque in Scandinavia. The Islamic Cooperation Council in Sweden (Islamiska samarbetsrådet — IS) and the Sweden's Muslim Council (Sveriges Muslimska Råd — SMR) are among the principal national umbrella bodies. There is no state-recognized established Islamic authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Sweden; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate.
