Switzerland has a Muslim community of approximately 5.4 percent of the population, or roughly 470,000 people, drawn predominantly from Balkan (Bosniak, Albanian, Kosovar, Macedonian) and Turkish migrant communities, with smaller communities of North African, Levantine, and South Asian origin. The community is concentrated in Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, and the cantons of Aargau and Vaud. The Mahmud Mosque in Zurich, opened in 1963 by the Ahmadiyya community, was the first purpose-built mosque in Switzerland; the Petit-Saconnex Mosque in Geneva, opened in 1978, is the oldest Sunni mosque. The 2009 federal referendum that constitutionally banned the construction of new minarets remains a defining feature of the legal landscape; existing mosques continue to operate but new minarets are prohibited. The Swiss Federation of Islamic Umbrella Organizations (FIDS) coordinates national affairs at the federal level, alongside cantonal associations. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Switzerland; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate.
