Tajikistan is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 96.6 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school. There is a small but distinctive Ismaili Shia community concentrated in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in the Pamir Mountains, where approximately 200,000 Pamir Tajiks (Wakhi, Shughni, Rushani, and other groups) have followed Nizari Ismaili Islam for centuries under the spiritual authority of the Aga Khan. The Tajik state has historically maintained a strict separation of religion and state inherited from the Soviet period and reinforced under post-1991 laws restricting public religious display. The Mausoleum of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani in Kulob, the burial site of the fourteenth-century Persian Sufi who was central to the Islamization of Kashmir, is a major pilgrimage destination. The Hisor Fortress mosque and the historic Khoja Mashad Mausoleum (built ninth to twelfth centuries) are also significant. The Council of Ulama (Shura-i Ulamo) of the Islamic Centre of the Republic of Tajikistan is the recognized authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Tajikistan; the Tehran/Jafari method is offered for the Pamir Ismaili community.
