Prayer times in Tanzania

Tanzania has a Muslim community of approximately 35 percent of the population per Pew Research, with figures higher in some surveys (the country has not officially counted religion in its census since 1967). The community is concentrated along the coast (the Swahili coast from Tanga to Mtwara) and overwhelmingly in the Zanzibar archipelago, where approximately 99 percent of the population is Muslim under the semi-autonomous Zanzibar government. Tanzanian Islam reflects the deep Indian Ocean Swahili Islamic heritage rooted in Arab, Persian, and Indian commercial networks reaching back over a millennium. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Shafi'i school with a strong Sufi presence (Qadiriyya, Shadhiliyya/Yashrutiyya, and Rifa'i orders) and smaller Twelver Shia, Bohra, and Khoja Ismaili communities of South Asian origin in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. The Old Fort and Stone Town of Zanzibar (a UNESCO World Heritage site) contains the historic Malindi Mosque (one of the oldest in East Africa), the Aga Khan Jamatkhana, and numerous other significant buildings.
