Tunisia is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 99 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school with the Ash'ari theological school, alongside a small Ibadi minority concentrated on the southern island of Djerba and a notable Sufi tradition (especially the Tijaniyya, Shadhiliyya, Aissawiyya, and Sulamiyya orders). Tunisia has a deep Islamic scholarly tradition. The Mosque of Uqba (Great Mosque of Kairouan), founded in 670 CE by the Arab conqueror Uqba ibn Nafi and rebuilt in subsequent centuries, is the oldest mosque in North Africa and one of the most architecturally significant mosques in the Islamic world; the city of Kairouan was the principal scholarly capital of the medieval Maghreb. The Zaytuna Mosque and University in Tunis, founded in 698 CE, is among the oldest universities in the world and was a major center of Maliki scholarship. The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Wizarat al-Shu'un al-Diniyya) oversees mosque administration. eSalah uses the Tunisian method (Fajr 18°, Isha 18°, custom adjustments) for Tunisian cities, the Ministry-published parameters.
