Ukraine has a Muslim community of approximately 1.5 percent of the population pre-2014, numbering roughly 500,000 people, comprising principally the indigenous Crimean Tatars (a Turkic-speaking Muslim community indigenous to Crimea since at least the medieval Golden Horde period and the Crimean Khanate of 1441–1783) and smaller communities of Volga Tatars, Azerbaijanis, Caucasus Muslims, and recent migrants from the Middle East and South Asia. The community has been substantially affected by the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea (where most Crimean Tatars resided) and the post-2022 invasion of Ukraine; many Crimean Tatars have been displaced from Crimea to mainland Ukraine since 2014, in a pattern that echoes the 1944 Stalinist deportation. The community is overwhelmingly Sunni of the Hanafi school. The Khan's Palace of Bakhchisaray in Crimea (sixteenth century) and the Bakhchisaray Han Cami (Khan's Mosque) are the central historical Islamic monuments. The Religious Administration of Muslims of Ukraine (DUMU) and the Religious Administration of Muslims of Crimea coordinate religious affairs. eSalah uses MWL default; Diyanet alternate.
