The United Arab Emirates is a Muslim-majority federation in which Islam is the official religion of the state. Approximately 76 percent of the total population is Muslim when including expatriates, and Sunni Muslims of the Maliki and Hanbali schools predominate among Emirati nationals, with a significant Twelver Shia minority of roughly 15 percent of citizens. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, completed in 2007, is among the largest mosques in the world and a major pilgrimage and tourist destination; the older Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai, built in 1979, remains a focal point for interfaith outreach. The UAE General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf) oversees mosque administration and the standardized Friday khutbah. Recent decades have seen the founding of the Mohammed bin Zayed University for Humanities and the Abu Dhabi-based Muslim Council of Elders. eSalah uses the Dubai method as the default calculation parameters for the UAE, drawn from Awqaf-published timetables; Umm al-Qura is offered as an alternate.
