Uruguay has a small Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.03 percent of the population, numbering roughly 1,000 to 2,000 adherents. The community is composed primarily of Levantine Arab descendants (Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian) who migrated in the early to mid-twentieth century, more recent Pakistani, Egyptian, and Iranian residents, and a notable native Uruguayan convert population. The community is concentrated in Montevideo and the resort city of Punta del Este (which has a notable Lebanese-origin community linked to the broader Argentine Levantine network). The Centro Islámico del Uruguay in Montevideo, founded in 1979, operates the country's principal mosque, the Mezquita Khaled. The Comunidad Islámica del Uruguay is the principal national umbrella body. There is no state Islamic authority, and the community is too small to support a formal Islamic school within Uruguay. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Uruguay, consistent with broader Latin American regional practice. The community maintains close cross-border links with the Argentine Muslim community for religious resources, halal certification, and major life-cycle events, especially through the King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center in Buenos Aires.
