Uzbekistan is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 96.5 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Hanafi school with a deeply rooted Sufi tradition centered on the Naqshbandi order, which originated in Bukhara in the fourteenth century under Baha-ud-Din Naqshband. The country contains some of the most architecturally and historically significant Islamic sites in Central Asia. Samarkand and Bukhara are UNESCO World Heritage cities of the highest order: the Registan complex in Samarkand (15th to 17th century) with the Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori Madrasahs is among the most photographed Islamic architectural ensembles in the world; the Bibi-Khanym Mosque (1404), the Gur-e-Amir mausoleum of Timur (1404), and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis are additional Samarkand monuments. The Po-i-Kalyan complex in Bukhara, including the 12th-century Kalyan Minaret that survived Genghis Khan's conquest, is among the oldest surviving major Islamic monuments in Central Asia. The Muftiate (Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Uzbekistan) is the principal religious authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default; the Diyanet method is offered as an alternate.
