Venezuela has a Muslim community estimated at approximately 0.4 percent of the population, numbering roughly 100,000 to 120,000 adherents. The community is composed primarily of Levantine Arab descendants (Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian) who migrated in the early to mid-twentieth century with major concentrations in Caracas, Maracaibo, and the Margarita Island commercial centers, more recent Pakistani and South Asian residents, and a notable native Venezuelan convert population. The Mosque Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim in Caracas (Mezquita de Caracas), opened in 1993 as one of the largest mosques in Latin America, was built with Saudi funding and accommodates several thousand worshippers under a 113-meter minaret that is among the tallest in the Americas. The Centro Cultural Islámico de Venezuela is the principal national umbrella body. There is also a substantial Twelver Shia community of Lebanese descent on Margarita Island and in Caracas. There is no state Islamic authority. eSalah uses the Muslim World League default for Venezuela, consistent with broader Latin American regional practice; the community maintains close ties with Colombian and Trinidadian Muslim networks.
