Yemen is a Muslim-majority country with approximately 99.1 percent of the population identifying as Muslim, with a distinctive sectarian composition: a Sunni majority of approximately 65 percent (predominantly Shafi'i school, concentrated in the southern, central, and eastern regions including Aden, Hadhramaut, Ta'izz, and Hudaydah) and a Zaidi Shia community of approximately 35 percent (a Fiver Shia tradition distinct from both Sunnism and Twelver Shi'ism, concentrated in the northern and northwestern highlands including Sa'dah, Sana'a, and the surrounding regions). The Zaidi Imamate of Yemen, founded by Imam Yahya ibn Husayn in 897 CE, ruled portions of Yemen for over a thousand years until the 1962 revolution. The Great Mosque of Sana'a (Al-Jami al-Kabir), built in the seventh century during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad on his instruction, is among the oldest mosques in Islamic history. The Hadhramaut region is the ancestral homeland of the Sayyid (descendants of the Prophet) families that spread Islam across the Indian Ocean. eSalah uses MWL default.
