Tehran has been the capital of Iran since 1796 under the Qajar dynasty and is today the country's political, commercial, and religious-administrative center, with a metropolitan population of over fifteen million. The city houses the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, designed as one of the largest covered prayer spaces in the world, and a wide range of historical and contemporary mosques including the Sepahsalar (now Shahid Motahari) Mosque and the Qajar-era Imamzadeh Saleh shrine in Tajrish. While the Twelver Shia hawza system's principal seminary remains in Qom — with Mashhad and Najaf as the other major nodes — Tehran is the seat of the Supreme Leader and of the modern administrative apparatus of Iran's official Shia establishment. The Friday prayer at Tehran University, broadcast nationally, carries political and religious weight; numerous imamzadeh shrines and the network of Bonyads (religious endowments) sustain everyday devotional life across the city's neighbourhoods.
