Harar in eastern Ethiopia, often called the fourth holiest city of Sunni Islam in local Muslim tradition, was the capital of the Adal Sultanate and from the sixteenth century the seat of an emirate of Harar that flourished as a center of Shafi'i jurisprudence and Qadiri Sufism. Within its walled jugol the city contains over eighty mosques traditionally said to date from before the nineteenth century, including the Jami Mosque rebuilt in the early twentieth century on a much older foundation, alongside hundreds of saints' shrines knit into the urban fabric. Harar produced its own Ajami written tradition in the local Harari language and was a major node connecting the Horn of Africa to Yemen and the Hadrami sayyid networks. The poet Arthur Rimbaud lived here in the 1880s, but for Muslims Harar's significance is the continuous mosque, dhikr, and shrine-pilgrimage culture that survives today within the UNESCO-protected old city.
