ۘ Signs of waqf (pauses)

Waqf (وقف, “stop”) signs tell the reciter where to pause for breath while intending to continue. They appear slightly smaller and raised above the line. Follow them to avoid changing the meaning. Where two signs appear one above the other, give preference to the one on top.

waqf tām — وقف تامّ — “Perfect stop” — the end of a verse. The meaning is complete; stop and take a breath before continuing. Shown by the verse circle.
مـ
waqf lāzim — وقف لازم — “Required stop” — it is absolutely necessary to stop; not stopping can change the meaning (like “Stand! not Sit!” vs “Stand not! Sit!”).
ط
waqf muṭlaq — وقف مطلق — “Absolute stop” — break the breath and voice before continuing. The sentence is not yet complete but more follows before the meaning finishes.
ج
waqf jāʾiz — وقف جائز — “Permissible stop” — better to stop here, but if you do not, that is fine.
ز
waqf mujawwaz — وقف مجوّز — It is better not to stop here.
ص
waqf murakhkhaṣ — وقف مرخّص — “Licensed pause” — continue reading; but if you are tired you may pause for a breath. More desirable to continue than at ز.
صلے
al-waṣl awlā — الوصل أولى — “Continuing is preferable” — it is better to carry on reciting here.
ق
qīla ʿalayhil-waqf — قيل عليه الوقف — It has been said that it is better not to stop here — the sign marks a difference of opinion on whether to stop.
قﻲ
qad yūṣal — قد يوصل — It is better to stop here, but continuing is permissible.
قف
qif — قِف — “Stop!” — used where the reciter might otherwise continue instead of stopping.
س
saktah — سكتة — “Silence” — stop reciting but do not break the breath before continuing. Obligatory in four places (Sūrah al-Kahf, Yāsīn, al-Qiyāmah and al-Muṭaffifīn).

waqfah — وقفة — Pause here longer than at a saktah, again without breaking the breath.
لا
— لا — “No!” — do not stop here, as it would affect the meaning. If it falls at a verse-end it is still better not to stop, but if you do the meaning is alright.
ك
kadhālik — كذلك — “Like that” — apply the previous waqf sign at this position as well.

muʿānaqah — معانقة — “Embracing stop” — triple dots appearing in pairs: stopping at the first forbids stopping at the second (and vice versa), or the meaning becomes incomplete. Stop at one or the other, not both.
— Marks a point where there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is the end of an āyah.
waqf an-nabī ﷺ — وقف النبي ﷺ — Indicates places where the Prophet ﷺ paused.
waqf ghufrān — وقف غفران — It is said that if the reciter and listener make duʿāʾ when pausing here, it will be answered.
waqf manzil — وقف منزل — Also waqf jibrāʾīl — where Jibrīl (peace be upon him) paused at the time of revelation.
۝ Punctuation marks in the Arabic text

Qurʾanic punctuation in the Arabic script uses several symbols indicating variations in methods of qirāʾah (recitation). These symbols, known as the ʿAlāmāt al-Waqf (signs for stops), are briefly described below.

Shows the end of a verse — a pause is a must.
مـ
Waqf Lāzim — The stop at which the word and meaning give a complete sense (a “complete stop”): the utterance is complete and separated from what follows.
ط
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waqf Awlā — May or may not stop, but the first preference is to stop. (The “sufficient stop”: stopping or continuing is permissible, yet stopping is preferable, since the phrase can stand by itself.)
ج
Waqf Jāʾiz — May or may not stop at the place indicated (no preference either way).
ز
It is better not to stop here.
Breaking the voice at a Qurʾanic word for a brief moment without taking a breath — at two counts (nearly two seconds).
صلے
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waṣl Awlā — May or may not stop at the place indicated, but the first preference is not to stop.
ق
It is better not to stop here.
صل
Better to stop.
قف
It is better to take a pause.
س
Stop the vocal sound for a moment without breaking the breath.

  1. 37:1

    وَالصّٰٓفّٰتِ صَفًّاۙ ۱

    By those [angels] lined up in rows

    فَالزّٰجِرٰتِ زَجۡرًاۙ ۲

    And those who drive [the clouds]

    فَالتّٰلِيٰتِ ذِكۡرًاۙ ۳

    And those who recite the message,

    اِنَّ اِلٰهَكُمۡ لَوَاحِدٌؕ ۴

    Indeed, your God is One,

    رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الۡمَشَارِقِ ؕ ۵

    Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.

  6. 37:6

    اِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَآءَ الدُّنۡيَا بِزِيۡنَةِ اۨلۡكَوَاكِبِۙ ۶

    Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

    وَحِفۡظًا مِّنۡ كُلِّ شَيۡطٰنٍ مَّارِدٍۚ ۷

    And as protection against every rebellious devil

    لَّا يَسَّمَّعُوۡنَ اِلَى الۡمَلَاِ الۡاَعۡلٰى وَيُقۡذَفُوۡنَ مِنۡ كُلِّ جَانِبٍۖ ۸

    [So] they may not listen to the exalted assembly [of angels] and are pelted from every side,

  9. 37:9

    دُحُوۡرًا وَّلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ وَّاصِبٌۙ ۹

    Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

    اِلَّا مَنۡ خَطِفَ الۡخَطۡفَةَ فَاَتۡبَعَهٗ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ ۱۰

    Except one who snatches [some words] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing [in brightness].

  11. 37:11

    فَاسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ اَهُمۡ اَشَدُّ خَلۡقًا اَمۡ مَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَاؕ اِنَّا خَلَقۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنۡ طِيۡنٍ لَّازِبٍ ۱۱

    Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult] creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky clay.

  12. 37:12

    بَلۡ عَجِبۡتَ وَيَسۡخَرُوۡنَ ۱۲

    But you wonder, while they mock,

    وَاِذَا ذُكِّرُوۡا لَا يَذۡكُرُوۡنَ ۱۳

    And when they are reminded, they remember not.

    وَاِذَا رَاَوۡا اٰيَةً يَّسۡتَسۡخِرُوۡنَ ۱۴

    And when they see a sign, they ridicule

    وَقَالُوۡۤا اِنۡ هٰذَاۤ اِلَّا سِحۡرٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۖۚ ۱۵

    And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

    ءَاِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُـنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوۡثُوۡنَۙ ۱۶

    When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

    اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الۡاَوَّلُوۡنَؕ ۱۷

    And our forefathers [as well]?"

    قُلۡ نَعَمۡ وَاَنۡـتُمۡ دٰخِرُوۡنَۚ ۱۸

    Say, "Yes, and you will be [rendered] contemptible."

  19. 37:19

    فَاِنَّمَا هِىَ زَجۡرَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌ فَاِذَا هُمۡ يَنۡظُرُوۡنَ ۱۹

    It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

  20. 37:20

    وَقَالُوۡا يٰوَيۡلَنَا هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الدِّيۡنِ ۲۰

    They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

  21. 37:21

    هٰذَا يَوۡمُ الۡفَصۡلِ الَّذِىۡ كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوۡنَ ۲۱

    [They will be told], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

  22. 37:22

    ۞ اُحۡشُرُوا الَّذِيۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡا وَاَزۡوَاجَهُمۡ وَمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡبُدُوۡنَۙ ۲۲

    [The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship

  23. 37:23

    مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ فَاهۡدُوۡهُمۡ اِلٰى صِرَاطِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ ۲۳

    Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

  24. 37:24

    وَقِفُوۡهُمۡ اِنَّهُمۡ مَّسْـُٔـوۡلُوۡنَۙ ۲۴

    And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

  25. 37:25

    مَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تَنَاصَرُوۡنَ ۲۵

    [They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

    بَلۡ هُمُ الۡيَوۡمَ مُسۡتَسۡلِمُوۡنَ ۲۶

    But they, that Day, are in surrender.

    And they will approach one another blaming each other.

    قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّكُمۡ كُنۡتُمۡ تَاۡتُوۡنَنَا عَنِ الۡيَمِيۡنِ ۲۸

    They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."

    قَالُوۡا بَلْ لَّمۡ تَكُوۡنُوۡا مُؤۡمِنِيۡنَۚ ۲۹

    The oppressors will say, "Rather, you [yourselves] were not believers,

    And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

    فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡنَا قَوۡلُ رَبِّنَآۖ اِنَّا لَذَآٮِٕقُوۡنَ ۳۱

    So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment].

    فَاَغۡوَيۡنٰكُمۡ اِنَّا كُنَّا غٰوِيۡنَ ۳۲

    And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

    فَاِنَّهُمۡ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ فِى الۡعَذَابِ مُشۡتَرِكُوۡنَ ۳۳

    So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

    اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَفۡعَلُ بِالۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَ ۳۴

    Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

  35. 37:35

    اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡۤا اِذَا قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُۙ يَسۡتَكۡبِرُوۡنَۙ ۳۵

    Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah," were arrogant

  36. 37:36

    وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ اَٮِٕنَّا لَتٰرِكُوۡۤا اٰلِهَـتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَّجۡـنُوۡنٍ ؕ ۳۶

    And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

  37. 37:37

    بَلۡ جَآءَ بِالۡحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَ ۳۷

    Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

    اِنَّكُمۡ لَذَآٮِٕقُوا الۡعَذَابِ الۡاَلِيۡمِۚ ۳۸

    Indeed, you [disbelievers] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

    وَمَا تُجۡزَوۡنَ اِلَّا مَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَۙ ۳۹

    And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

    Those will have a provision determined -

    Fruits; and they will be honored

    There will be circulated among them a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring,

    بَيۡضَآءَ لَذَّةٍ لِّلشّٰرِبِيۡنَۖۚ ۴۶

    White and delicious to the drinkers;

    وَعِنۡدَهُمۡ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرۡفِ عِيۡنٌۙ ۴۸

    And with them will be women limiting [their] glances, with large, [beautiful] eyes,

    كَاَنَّهُنَّ بَيۡضٌ مَّكۡنُوۡنٌ ۴۹

    As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected.

  50. 37:50

    فَاَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلٰى بَعۡضٍ يَّتَسَآءَلُوۡنَ ۵۰

    And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

  51. 37:51

    قَالَ قَآٮِٕلٌ مِّنۡهُمۡ اِنِّىۡ كَانَ لِىۡ قَرِيۡنٌۙ ۵۱

    A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion [on earth]

    يَقُوۡلُ اَءِ نَّكَ لَمِنَ الۡمُصَدِّقِيۡنَ ۵۲

    Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

    ءَاِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَدِيۡنُوۡنَ ۵۳

    That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

    قَالَ هَلۡ اَنۡتُمۡ مُّطَّلِعُوۡنَ ۵۴

    He will say, "Would you [care to] look?"

  55. 37:55

    فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَاٰهُ فِىۡ سَوَآءِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ ۵۵

    And he will look and see him in the midst of the Hellfire.

  56. 37:56

    قَالَ تَاللّٰهِ اِنۡ كِدْتَّ لَـتُرۡدِيۡنِۙ ۵۶

    He will say, "By Allah, you almost ruined me.

  57. 37:57

    وَلَوۡلَا نِعۡمَةُ رَبِّىۡ لَـكُنۡتُ مِنَ الۡمُحۡضَرِيۡنَ ۵۷

    If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell].

  58. 37:58

    اَفَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَيِّتِيۡنَۙ ۵۸

    Then, are we not to die

    اِلَّا مَوۡتَتَـنَا الۡاُوۡلٰى وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِيۡنَ ۵۹

    Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

    اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِيۡمُ ۶۰

    Indeed, this is the great attainment.

    لِمِثۡلِ هٰذَا فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ الۡعٰمِلُوۡنَ ۶۱

    For the like of this let the workers [on earth] work.

    اَذٰ لِكَ خَيۡرٌ نُّزُلًا اَمۡ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّوۡمِ ۶۲

    Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum?

  63. 37:63

    اِنَّا جَعَلۡنٰهَا فِتۡنَةً لِّلظّٰلِمِيۡنَ ۶۳

    Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

  64. 37:64

    اِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخۡرُجُ فِىۡۤ اَصۡلِ الۡجَحِيۡمِۙ ۶۴

    Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

  65. 37:65

    طَلۡعُهَا كَاَنَّهٗ رُءُوۡسُ الشَّيٰطِيۡنِ ۶۵

    Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

  66. 37:66

    فَاِنَّهُمۡ لَاٰكِلُوۡنَ مِنۡهَا فَمٰلِــُٔــوۡنَ مِنۡهَا الۡبُطُوۡنَ ؕ ۶۶

    And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

  67. 37:67

    ثُمَّ اِنَّ لَهُمۡ عَلَيۡهَا لَشَوۡبًا مِّنۡ حَمِيۡمٍۚ ۶۷

    Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

    ثُمَّ اِنَّ مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ لَا۟اِلَى الۡجَحِيۡمِ ۶۸

    Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

  69. 37:69

    اِنَّهُمۡ اَلۡفَوۡا اٰبَآءَهُمۡ ضَآلِّيۡنَۙ ۶۹

    Indeed they found their fathers astray.

  70. 37:70

    فَهُمۡ عَلٰٓى اٰثٰرِهِمۡ يُهۡرَعُوۡنَ ۷۰

    So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

  71. 37:71

    وَلَـقَدۡ ضَلَّ قَبۡلَهُمۡ اَكۡثَرُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ ۷۱

    And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

    وَلَقَدۡ اَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيۡهِمۡ مُّنۡذِرِيۡنَ ۷۲

    And We had already sent among them warners.

    فَانْظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الۡمُنۡذَرِيۡنَۙ ۷۳

    Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

  74. 37:74

    اِلَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ ۷۴

    But not the chosen servants of Allah.

  75. 37:75

    وَلَقَدۡ نَادٰٮنَا نُوۡحٌ فَلَنِعۡمَ الۡمُجِيۡبُوۡنَۖ ۷۵

    And Noah had certainly called Us, and [We are] the best of responders.

  76. 37:76

    وَنَجَّيۡنٰهُ وَاَهۡلَهٗ مِنَ الۡكَرۡبِ الۡعَظِيۡمِۖ ۷۶

    And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

  77. 37:77

    وَجَعَلۡنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهٗ هُمُ الۡبٰقِيۡنَۖ ۷۷

    And We made his descendants those remaining [on the earth]

  78. 37:78

    وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۖ ۷۸

    And left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

  79. 37:79

    سَلٰمٌ عَلٰى نُوۡحٍ فِى الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ ۷۹

    "Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

  80. 37:80

    اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ ۸۰

    Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

  81. 37:81

    اِنَّهٗ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ ۸۱

    Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

  82. 37:82

    ثُمَّ اَغۡرَقۡنَا الۡاٰخَرِيۡنَ ۸۲

    Then We drowned the disbelievers.

  83. 37:83

    ۞ وَاِنَّ مِنۡ شِيۡعَتِهٖ لَاِبۡرٰهِيۡمَۘ ۸۳

    And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

    اِذۡ جَآءَ رَبَّهٗ بِقَلۡبٍ سَلِيۡمٍ ۸۴

    When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

    اِذۡ قَالَ لِاَبِيۡهِ وَقَوۡمِهٖ مَاذَا تَعۡبُدُوۡنَۚ ۸۵

    [And] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

    اَٮِٕفۡكًا اٰلِهَةً دُوۡنَ اللّٰهِ تُرِيۡدُوۡنَؕ ۸۶

    Is it falsehood [as] gods other than Allah you desire?

  87. 37:87

    فَمَا ظَنُّكُمۡ بِرَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ ۸۷

    Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

  88. 37:88

    فَنَظَرَ نَظۡرَةً فِى النُّجُوۡمِۙ ۸۸

    And he cast a look at the stars

  89. 37:89

    فَقَالَ اِنِّىۡ سَقِيۡمٌ ۸۹

    And said, "Indeed, I am [about to be] ill."

  90. 37:90

    فَتَوَلَّوۡا عَنۡهُ مُدۡبِرِيۡنَ ۹۰

    So they turned away from him, departing.

  91. 37:91

    فَرَاغَ اِلٰٓى اٰلِهَتِهِمۡ فَقَالَ اَلَا تَاۡكُلُوۡنَۚ ۹۱

    Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?

  92. 37:92

    مَا لَـكُمۡ لَا تَنۡطِقُوۡنَ ۹۲

    What is [wrong] with you that you do not speak?"

  93. 37:93

    فَرَاغَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ضَرۡبًۢا بِالۡيَمِيۡنِ ۹۳

    And he turned upon them a blow with [his] right hand.

  94. 37:94

    فَاَقۡبَلُوۡۤا اِلَيۡهِ يَزِفُّوۡنَ ۹۴

    Then the people came toward him, hastening.

  95. 37:95

    قَالَ اَتَعۡبُدُوۡنَ مَا تَنۡحِتُوۡنَۙ ۹۵

    He said, "Do you worship that which you [yourselves] carve,

  96. 37:96

    وَاللّٰهُ خَلَقَكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ۹۶

    While Allah created you and that which you do?"

  97. 37:97

    قَالُوا ابۡنُوۡا لَهٗ بُنۡيَانًا فَاَلۡقُوۡهُ فِى الۡجَحِيۡمِ ۹۷

    They said, "Construct for him a furnace and throw him into the burning fire."

    فَاَرَادُوۡا بِهٖ كَيۡدًا فَجَعَلۡنٰهُمُ الۡاَسۡفَلِيۡنَ ۹۸

    And they intended for him a plan, but We made them the most debased.

    وَقَالَ اِنِّىۡ ذَاهِبٌ اِلٰى رَبِّىۡ سَيَهۡدِيۡنِ ۹۹

    And [then] he said, "Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.

    رَبِّ هَبۡ لِىۡ مِنَ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ ۱۰۰

    My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous."

    فَبَشَّرۡنٰهُ بِغُلٰمٍ حَلِيۡمٍ ۱۰۱

    So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

    فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعۡىَ قَالَ يٰبُنَىَّ اِنِّىۡۤ اَرٰى فِى الۡمَنَامِ اَنِّىۡۤ اَذۡبَحُكَ فَانْظُرۡ مَاذَا تَرٰىؕ قَالَ يٰۤاَبَتِ افۡعَلۡ مَا تُؤۡمَرُ سَتَجِدُنِىۡۤ اِنۡ شَآءَ اللّٰهُ مِنَ الصّٰبِرِيۡنَ ۱۰۲

    And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast."

  103. 37:103

    فَلَمَّاۤ اَسۡلَمَا وَتَلَّهٗ لِلۡجَبِيۡنِۚ ۱۰۳

    And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,

    وَنَادَيۡنٰهُ اَنۡ يّٰۤاِبۡرٰهِيۡمُۙ ۱۰۴

    We called to him, "O Abraham,

  105. 37:105

    قَدۡ صَدَّقۡتَ الرُّءۡيَاۚ اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ ۱۰۵

    You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

  106. 37:106

    اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ الۡبَلٰٓؤُا الۡمُبِيۡنُ ۱۰۶

    Indeed, this was the clear trial.

  107. 37:107

    وَفَدَيۡنٰهُ بِذِبۡحٍ عَظِيۡمٍ ۱۰۷

    And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,

  108. 37:108

    وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۖ ۱۰۸

    And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

  109. 37:109

    سَلٰمٌ عَلٰٓى اِبۡرٰهِيۡمَ ۱۰۹

    "Peace upon Abraham."

  110. 37:110

    كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ ۱۱۰

    Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

  111. 37:111

    اِنَّهٗ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ ۱۱۱

    Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

    وَبَشَّرۡنٰهُ بِاِسۡحٰقَ نَبِيًّا مِّنَ الصّٰلِحِيۡنَ ۱۱۲

    And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.

    وَبٰرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ وَعَلٰٓى اِسۡحٰقَؕ وَ مِنۡ ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحۡسِنٌ وَّظَالِمٌ لِّنَفۡسِهٖ مُبِيۡنٌ ۱۱۳

    And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself.

    وَلَقَدۡ مَنَنَّا عَلٰى مُوۡسٰى وَهٰرُوۡنَۚ ۱۱۴

    And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

    وَنَجَّيۡنٰهُمَا وَقَوۡمَهُمَا مِنَ الۡكَرۡبِ الۡعَظِيۡمِۚ ۱۱۵

    And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

    وَنَصَرۡنٰهُمۡ فَكَانُوۡا هُمُ الۡغٰلِبِيۡنَۚ ۱۱۶

    And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

    وَاٰتَيۡنٰهُمَا الۡكِتٰبَ الۡمُسۡتَبِيۡنَۚ ۱۱۷

    And We gave them the explicit Scripture,

    وَهَدَيۡنٰهُمَا الصِّرَاطَ الۡمُسۡتَقِيۡمَۚ ۱۱۸

    And We guided them on the straight path.

    وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمَا فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۙ ۱۱۹

    And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations:

  120. 37:120

    سَلٰمٌ عَلٰى مُوۡسٰى وَهٰرُوۡنَ ۱۲۰

    "Peace upon Moses and Aaron."

  121. 37:121

    اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ ۱۲۱

    Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

    اِنَّهُمَا مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ ۱۲۲

    Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

    وَاِنَّ اِلۡيَاسَ لَمِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَؕ ۱۲۳

    And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

    اِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهٖۤ اَلَا تَتَّقُوۡنَ ۱۲۴

    When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah?

  125. 37:125

    اَتَدۡعُوۡنَ بَعۡلًا وَّتَذَرُوۡنَ اَحۡسَنَ الۡخٰلِقِيۡنَۙ ۱۲۵

    Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators -

    اللّٰهَ رَبَّكُمۡ وَرَبَّ اٰبَآٮِٕكُمُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ ۱۲۶

    Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"

    فَكَذَّبُوۡهُ فَاِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُوۡنَۙ ۱۲۷

    And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment],

    اِلَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ ۱۲۸

    Except the chosen servants of Allah.

  129. 37:129

    وَتَرَكۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ فِى الۡاٰخِرِيۡنَۙ ۱۲۹

    And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations:

  130. 37:130

    سَلٰمٌ عَلٰٓى اِلۡ يَاسِيۡنَ ۱۳۰

    "Peace upon Elias."

    اِنَّا كَذٰلِكَ نَجۡزِى الۡمُحۡسِنِيۡنَ ۱۳۱

    Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

    اِنَّهٗ مِنۡ عِبَادِنَا الۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ ۱۳۲

    Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

    وَاِنَّ لُوۡطًا لَّمِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَؕ ۱۳۳

    And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

  134. 37:134

    اِذۡ نَجَّيۡنٰهُ وَاَهۡلَهٗۤ اَجۡمَعِيۡنَۙ ۱۳۴

    [So mention] when We saved him and his family, all,

  135. 37:135

    اِلَّا عَجُوۡزًا فِى الۡغٰبِرِيۡنَ ۱۳۵

    Except his wife among those who remained [with the evildoers].

  136. 37:136

    ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا الۡاٰخَرِيۡنَ ۱۳۶

    Then We destroyed the others.

  137. 37:137

    وَاِنَّكُمۡ لَتَمُرُّوۡنَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ مُّصۡبِحِيۡنَۙ ۱۳۷

    And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

  138. 37:138

    وَبِالَّيۡلِؕ اَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ ۱۳۸

    And at night. Then will you not use reason?

  139. 37:139

    وَاِنَّ يُوۡنُسَ لَمِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَؕ ۱۳۹

    And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

  140. 37:140

    اِذۡ اَبَقَ اِلَى الۡفُلۡكِ الۡمَشۡحُوۡنِۙ ۱۴۰

    [Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship.

  141. 37:141

    فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ الۡمُدۡحَضِيۡنَۚ ۱۴۱

    And he drew lots and was among the losers.

  142. 37:142

    فَالۡتَقَمَهُ الۡحُوۡتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيۡمٌ ۱۴۲

    Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.

  143. 37:143

    فَلَوۡلَاۤ اَنَّهٗ كَانَ مِنَ الۡمُسَبِّحِيۡنَۙ ۱۴۳

    And had he not been of those who exalt Allah,

  144. 37:144

    لَلَبِثَ فِىۡ بَطۡنِهٖۤ اِلٰى يَوۡمِ يُبۡعَثُوۡنَۚ ۱۴۴

    He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.

    37:145

    ۞ فَنَبَذۡنٰهُ بِالۡعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيۡمٌۚ ۱۴۵

    But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

  146. 37:146

    وَاَنۡۢبَتۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ شَجَرَةً مِّنۡ يَّقۡطِيۡنٍۚ ۱۴۶

    And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.

    وَاَرۡسَلۡنٰهُ اِلٰى مِائَةِ اَلۡفٍ اَوۡ يَزِيۡدُوۡنَۚ ۱۴۷

    And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.

  148. 37:148

    فَاٰمَنُوۡا فَمَتَّعۡنٰهُمۡ اِلٰى حِيۡنٍؕ ۱۴۸

    And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.

    فَاسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ اَلِرَبِّكَ الۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ الۡبَنُوۡنَۙ ۱۴۹

    So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?

  150. 37:150

    اَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةَ اِنَاثًا وَّهُمۡ شٰهِدُوۡنَ ۱۵۰

    Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"

  151. 37:151

    اَلَاۤ اِنَّهُمۡ مِّنۡ اِفۡكِهِمۡ لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ ۱۵۱

    Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,

  152. 37:152

    وَلَدَ اللّٰهُۙ وَاِنَّهُمۡ لَـكٰذِبُوۡنَ ۱۵۲

    " Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.

  153. 37:153

    اَصۡطَفَى الۡبَنَاتِ عَلَى الۡبَنِيۡنَؕ ۱۵۳

    Has He chosen daughters over sons?

  154. 37:154

    مَا لَـكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُوۡنَ ۱۵۴

    What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?

  155. 37:155

    اَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَۚ ۱۵۵

    Then will you not be reminded?

  156. 37:156

    اَمۡ لَـكُمۡ سُلۡطٰنٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۙ ۱۵۶

    Or do you have a clear authority?

  157. 37:157

    فَاۡتُوۡا بِكِتٰبِكُمۡ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ ۱۵۷

    Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

  158. 37:158

    وَجَعَلُوۡا بَيۡنَهٗ وَبَيۡنَ الۡجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ؕ وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمَتِ الۡجِنَّةُ اِنَّهُمۡ لَمُحۡضَرُوۡنَۙ ۱۵۸

    And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment].

  159. 37:159

    سُبۡحٰنَ اللّٰهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُوۡنَۙ ۱۵۹

    Exalted is Allah above what they describe,

  160. 37:160

    اِلَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ ۱۶۰

    Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin].

  161. 37:161

    فَاِنَّكُمۡ وَمَا تَعۡبُدُوۡنَۙ ۱۶۱

    So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship,

  162. 37:162

    مَاۤ اَنۡـتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ بِفٰتِنِيۡنَۙ ۱۶۲

    You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

  163. 37:163

    اِلَّا مَنۡ هُوَ صَالِ الۡجَحِيۡمِ ۱۶۳

    Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire.

  164. 37:164

    وَمَا مِنَّاۤ اِلَّا لَهٗ مَقَامٌ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌۙ ۱۶۴

    [The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.

  165. 37:165

    وَّاِنَّا لَـنَحۡنُ الصَّآفُّوۡنَۚ ۱۶۵

    And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer].

  166. 37:166

    وَاِنَّا لَـنَحۡنُ الۡمُسَبِّحُوۡنَ ۱۶۶

    And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah."

  167. 37:167

    وَاِنۡ كَانُوۡا لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ ۱۶۷

    And indeed, the disbelievers used to say,

    لَوۡ اَنَّ عِنۡدَنَا ذِكۡرًا مِّنَ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَۙ ۱۶۸

    "If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples,

  169. 37:169

    لَـكُنَّا عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ الۡمُخۡلَصِيۡنَ ۱۶۹

    We would have been the chosen servants of Allah."

  170. 37:170

    فَكَفَرُوۡا بِهٖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۱۷۰

    But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know.

  171. 37:171

    وَلَقَدۡ سَبَقَتۡ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَۖۚ ۱۷۱

    And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

  172. 37:172

    اِنَّهُمۡ لَهُمُ الۡمَنۡصُوۡرُوۡنَ ۱۷۲

    [That] indeed, they would be those given victory

  173. 37:173

    وَاِنَّ جُنۡدَنَا لَهُمُ الۡغٰلِبُوۡنَ ۱۷۳

    And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome.

  174. 37:174

    فَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتّٰى حِيۡنٍۙ ۱۷۴

    So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time.

  175. 37:175

    وَاَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُوۡنَ ۱۷۵

    And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see.

  176. 37:176

    اَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسۡتَعۡجِلُوۡنَ ۱۷۶

    Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

  177. 37:177

    فَاِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ فَسَآءَ صَبَاحُ الۡمُنۡذَرِيۡنَ ۱۷۷

    But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

  178. 37:178

    وَتَوَلَّ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتّٰى حِيۡنٍۙ ۱۷۸

    And leave them for a time.

  179. 37:179

    وَّاَبۡصِرۡ فَسَوۡفَ يُبۡصِرُوۡنَ ۱۷۹

    And see, for they are going to see.

  180. 37:180

    سُبۡحٰنَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ الۡعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُوۡنَۚ ۱۸۰

    Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

  181. 37:181

    وَسَلٰمٌ عَلَى الۡمُرۡسَلِيۡنَۚ ۱۸۱

    And peace upon the messengers.

  182. 37:182

    وَالۡحَمۡدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ ۱۸۲

    And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
