سورت الدخان — لوګی
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ۘ Signs of waqf (pauses)
Waqf (وقف, “stop”) signs tell the reciter where to pause for breath while intending to continue. They appear slightly smaller and raised above the line. Follow them to avoid changing the meaning. Where two signs appear one above the other, give preference to the one on top.
- ◯
- waqf tām — وقف تامّ — “Perfect stop” — the end of a verse. The meaning is complete; stop and take a breath before continuing. Shown by the verse circle.
- مـ
- waqf lāzim — وقف لازم — “Required stop” — it is absolutely necessary to stop; not stopping can change the meaning (like “Stand! not Sit!” vs “Stand not! Sit!”).
- ط
- waqf muṭlaq — وقف مطلق — “Absolute stop” — break the breath and voice before continuing. The sentence is not yet complete but more follows before the meaning finishes.
- ج
- waqf jāʾiz — وقف جائز — “Permissible stop” — better to stop here, but if you do not, that is fine.
- ز
- waqf mujawwaz — وقف مجوّز — It is better not to stop here.
- ص
- waqf murakhkhaṣ — وقف مرخّص — “Licensed pause” — continue reading; but if you are tired you may pause for a breath. More desirable to continue than at ز.
- صلے
- al-waṣl awlā — الوصل أولى — “Continuing is preferable” — it is better to carry on reciting here.
- ق
- qīla ʿalayhil-waqf — قيل عليه الوقف — It has been said that it is better not to stop here — the sign marks a difference of opinion on whether to stop.
- قﻲ
- qad yūṣal — قد يوصل — It is better to stop here, but continuing is permissible.
- قف
- qif — قِف — “Stop!” — used where the reciter might otherwise continue instead of stopping.
- س
- saktah — سكتة — “Silence” — stop reciting but do not break the breath before continuing. Obligatory in four places (Sūrah al-Kahf, Yāsīn, al-Qiyāmah and al-Muṭaffifīn).
- وقفة
- waqfah — وقفة — Pause here longer than at a saktah, again without breaking the breath.
- لا
- lā — لا — “No!” — do not stop here, as it would affect the meaning. If it falls at a verse-end it is still better not to stop, but if you do the meaning is alright.
- ك
- kadhālik — كذلك — “Like that” — apply the previous waqf sign at this position as well.
- ∴ ∴
- muʿānaqah — معانقة — “Embracing stop” — triple dots appearing in pairs: stopping at the first forbids stopping at the second (and vice versa), or the meaning becomes incomplete. Stop at one or the other, not both.
- ∴
- — — Marks a point where there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is the end of an āyah.
- waqf an-nabī ﷺ — وقف النبي ﷺ — Indicates places where the Prophet ﷺ paused.
- waqf ghufrān — وقف غفران — It is said that if the reciter and listener make duʿāʾ when pausing here, it will be answered.
- waqf manzil — وقف منزل — Also waqf jibrāʾīl — where Jibrīl (peace be upon him) paused at the time of revelation.
Punctuation marks in the Arabic text
Qurʾanic punctuation in the Arabic script uses several symbols indicating variations in methods of qirāʾah (recitation). These symbols, known as the ʿAlāmāt al-Waqf (signs for stops), are briefly described below.

- Shows the end of a verse — a pause is a must.
- مـ
- Waqf Lāzim — The stop at which the word and meaning give a complete sense (a “complete stop”): the utterance is complete and separated from what follows.
- ط
- Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waqf Awlā — May or may not stop, but the first preference is to stop. (The “sufficient stop”: stopping or continuing is permissible, yet stopping is preferable, since the phrase can stand by itself.)
- ج
- Waqf Jāʾiz — May or may not stop at the place indicated (no preference either way).
- ز
- It is better not to stop here.
- ﺱ
- Breaking the voice at a Qurʾanic word for a brief moment without taking a breath — at two counts (nearly two seconds).
- صلے
- Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waṣl Awlā — May or may not stop at the place indicated, but the first preference is not to stop.
- ق
- It is better not to stop here.
- صل
- Better to stop.
- قف
- It is better to take a pause.
- س
- Stop the vocal sound for a moment without breaking the breath.
- وقفة
- Vocal-sound stoppage for more than a moment, without breaking the breath.
- لا
- Waqf Mamnūʿ — Must not stop at the place indicated.
- ك
- Ramz-e-Waqf — The same waqf sign as the one that has previously passed applies here.
- ∴ ∴
- Taʿānuq al-Waqf — May stop at either place indicated, but not at both.

حٰمٓۛۚ ۱
Ha, Meem.
تفسیر
-
وَالۡكِتٰبِ الۡمُبِيۡنِۛۙ ۲
By the clear Book,
تفسیر
-
اِنَّاۤ اَنۡزَلۡنٰهُ فِىۡ لَيۡلَةٍ مُّبٰـرَكَةٍ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُنۡذِرِيۡنَ ۳
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
تفسیر
-
فِيۡهَا يُفۡرَقُ كُلُّ اَمۡرٍ حَكِيۡمٍۙ ۴
On that night is made distinct every precise matter -
تفسیر
-
اَمۡرًا مِّنۡ عِنۡدِنَاؕ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُرۡسِلِيۡنَۚ ۵
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]
تفسیر
-
رَحۡمَةً مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِيۡعُ الۡعَلِيۡمُۙ ۶
As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
تفسیر
ورته آیتونه 1
-
رَبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَاۘ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ مُّوۡقِنِيۡنَ ۷
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.
تفسیر
-
لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ يُحۡىٖ وَيُمِيۡتُؕ رَبُّكُمۡ وَرَبُّ اٰبَآٮِٕكُمُ الۡاَوَّلِيۡنَ ۸
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.
تفسیر
-
بَلۡ هُمۡ فِىۡ شَكٍّ يَّلۡعَبُوۡنَ ۹
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
تفسیر
-
فَارۡتَقِبۡ يَوۡمَ تَاۡتِى السَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِيۡنٍۙ ۱۰
Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.
تفسیر
-
يَغۡشَى النَّاسَؕ هٰذَا عَذَابٌ اَلِيۡمٌ ۱۱
Covering the people; this is a painful torment.
تفسیر
-
رَبَّنَا اكۡشِفۡ عَنَّا الۡعَذَابَ اِنَّا مُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ۱۲
[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."
تفسیر
-
اَنّٰى لَهُمُ الذِّكۡرٰى وَقَدۡ جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ مُّبِيۡنٌۙ ۱۳
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.
تفسیر
-
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوۡا عَنۡهُ وَقَالُوۡا مُعَلَّمٌ مَّجۡنُوۡنٌۘ ۱۴
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."
تفسیر
-
اِنَّا كَاشِفُوا الۡعَذَابِ قَلِيۡلًا اِنَّكُمۡ عَآٮِٕدُوۡنَۘ ۱۵
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].
تفسیر
-
يَوۡمَ نَبۡطِشُ الۡبَطۡشَةَ الۡكُبۡـرٰىۚ اِنَّا مُنۡتَقِمُوۡنَ ۱۶
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.
تفسیر
-
۞ وَلَقَدۡ فَتَنَّا قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَ جَآءَهُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ كَرِيۡمٌۙ ۱۷
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger,

-
اَنۡ اَدُّوۡۤا اِلَىَّ عِبَادَ اللّٰهِؕ اِنِّىۡ لَـكُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِيۡنٌۙ ۱۸
[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allah. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"
تفسیر
-
وَّاَنۡ لَّا تَعۡلُوۡا عَلَى اللّٰهِۚ اِنِّىۡۤ اٰتِيۡكُمۡ بِسُلۡطٰنٍ مُّبِيۡنٍۚ ۱۹
And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority.
تفسیر
-
وَاِنِّىۡ عُذۡتُ بِرَبِّىۡ وَرَبِّكُمۡ اَنۡ تَرۡجُمُوۡنِۚ ۲۰
And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.
تفسیر
-
وَاِنۡ لَّمۡ تُؤۡمِنُوۡا لِىۡ فَاعۡتَزِلُوۡنِ ۲۱
But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."
تفسیر
-
فَدَعَا رَبَّهٗۤ اَنَّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ قَوۡمٌ مُّجۡرِمُوۡنَ ۲۲
And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.
تفسیر
-
فَاَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِىۡ لَيۡلًا اِنَّكُمۡ مُّتَّبَعُوۡنَۙ ۲۳
[Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.
تفسیر
-
وَاتۡرُكِ الۡبَحۡرَ رَهۡوًاؕ اِنَّهُمۡ جُنۡدٌ مُّغۡرَقُوۡنَ ۲۴
And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."
تفسیر
-
كَمۡ تَرَكُوۡا مِنۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُيُوۡنٍۙ ۲۵
How much they left behind of gardens and springs
تفسیر
-
وَّزُرُوۡعٍ وَّمَقَامٍ كَرِيۡمٍۙ ۲۶
And crops and noble sites
تفسیر
-
وَّنَعۡمَةٍ كَانُوۡا فِيۡهَا فٰكِهِيۡنَۙ ۲۷
And comfort wherein they were amused.
تفسیر
ورته آیتونه 1
-
كَذٰلِكَ وَاَوۡرَثۡنٰهَا قَوۡمًا اٰخَرِيۡنَ ۲۸
Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.
تفسیر
-
فَمَا بَكَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمُ السَّمَآءُ وَالۡاَرۡضُ وَمَا كَانُوۡا مُنۡظَرِيۡنَ ۲۹
And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
تفسیر
-
وَلَقَدۡ نَجَّيۡنَا بَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ مِنَ الۡعَذَابِ الۡمُهِيۡنِۙ ۳۰
And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -
تفسیر
-
مِنۡ فِرۡعَوۡنَؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ عَالِيًا مِّنَ الۡمُسۡرِفِيۡنَ ۳۱
From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
تفسیر
-
وَلَقَدِ اخۡتَرۡنٰهُمۡ عَلٰى عِلۡمٍ عَلَى الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۚ ۳۲
And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.
تفسیر
-
وَاٰتَيۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنَ الۡاٰيٰتِ مَا فِيۡهِ بَلٰٓؤٌا مُّبِيۡنٌ ۳۳
And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.
تفسیر
-
اِنَّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ لَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَۙ ۳۴
Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,
تفسیر
ورته آیتونه 1
-
اِنۡ هِىَ اِلَّا مَوۡتَتُنَا الۡاُوۡلٰى وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُنۡشَرِيۡنَ ۳۵
"There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.
تفسیر
-
فَاۡتُوۡا بِاٰبَآٮِٕنَاۤ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ ۳۶
Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."
تفسیر
-
اَهُمۡ خَيۡرٌ اَمۡ قَوۡمُ تُبَّعٍۙ وَّ الَّذِيۡنَ مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِمۡؕ اَهۡلَكۡنٰهُمۡ اِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوۡا مُجۡرِمِيۡنَ ۳۷
Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
تفسیر
-
وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا لٰعِبِيۡنَ ۳۸
And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.
تفسیر
-
مَا خَلَقۡنٰهُمَاۤ اِلَّا بِالۡحَقِّ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۳۹
We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
تفسیر
-
اِنَّ يَوۡمَ الۡفَصۡلِ مِيۡقَاتُهُمۡ اَجۡمَعِيۡنَۙ ۴۰
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -
تفسیر
-
يَوۡمَ لَا يُغۡنِىۡ مَوۡلًى عَنۡ مَّوۡلًى شَيۡــًٔا وَّلَا هُمۡ يُنۡصَرُوۡنَۙ ۴۱
The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -
تفسیر
-
اِلَّا مَنۡ رَّحِمَ اللّٰهُؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الرَّحِيۡمُ ۴۲
Except those [believers] on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
تفسیر
-
اِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّوۡمِۙ ۴۳
Indeed, the tree of zaqqum
تفسیر
-
طَعَامُ الۡاَثِيۡمِۛۚۖ ۴۴
Is food for the sinful.
تفسیر
-
كَالۡمُهۡلِۛۚ يَغۡلِىۡ فِى الۡبُطُوۡنِۙ ۴۵
Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
تفسیر
-
كَغَلۡىِ الۡحَمِيۡمِ ۴۶
Like the boiling of scalding water.
تفسیر
-
خُذُوۡهُ فَاعۡتِلُوۡهُ اِلٰى سَوَآءِ الۡجَحِيۡمِۖ ۴۷
[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,
تفسیر
-
ثُمَّ صُبُّوۡا فَوۡقَ رَاۡسِهٖ مِنۡ عَذَابِ الۡحَمِيۡمِؕ ۴۸
Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."
تفسیر
-
ذُقۡۖۚ اِنَّكَ اَنۡتَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡكَرِيۡمُ ۴۹
[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!
تفسیر
-
اِنَّ هٰذَا مَا كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تَمۡتَرُوۡنَ ۵۰
Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."
تفسیر
-
اِنَّ الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ فِىۡ مَقَامٍ اَمِيۡنٍۙ ۵۱
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place;
تفسیر
-
فِىۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُيُوۡنٍۙۚ ۵۲
Within gardens and springs,
تفسیر
-
يَّلۡبَسُوۡنَ مِنۡ سُنۡدُسٍ وَّاِسۡتَبۡرَقٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِيۡنَۚۙ ۵۳
Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.
تفسیر
-
كَذٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجۡنٰهُمۡ بِحُوۡرٍ عِيۡنٍؕ ۵۴
Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.
تفسیر
-
يَدۡعُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ اٰمِنِيۡنَۙ ۵۵
They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure.
تفسیر
-
لَا يَذُوۡقُوۡنَ فِيۡهَا الۡمَوۡتَ اِلَّا الۡمَوۡتَةَ الۡاُوۡلٰىۚ وَوَقٰٮهُمۡ عَذَابَ الۡجَحِيۡمِۙ ۵۶
They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire

ورته آیتونه 3
9:71 وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ أُولَـٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ 10:63 ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ 57:11 مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يُقْرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَـٰعِفَهُۥ لَهُۥ وَلَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ كَرِيمٌ -
فَضۡلًا مِّنۡ رَّبِّكَ ؕ ذٰ لِكَ هُوَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡعَظِيۡمُ ۵۷
As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.
تفسیر
-
فَاِنَّمَا يَسَّرۡنٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَذَكَّرُوۡنَ ۵۸
And indeed, We have eased the Qur'an in your tongue that they might be reminded.
تفسیر
-
فَارۡتَقِبۡ اِنَّهُمۡ مُّرۡتَقِبُوۡنَ ۵۹
So watch, [O Muhammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].
