بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

ۘ Signs of waqf (pauses)

Waqf (وقف, “stop”) signs tell the reciter where to pause for breath while intending to continue. They appear slightly smaller and raised above the line. Follow them to avoid changing the meaning. Where two signs appear one above the other, give preference to the one on top.

waqf tām — وقف تامّ — “Perfect stop” — the end of a verse. The meaning is complete; stop and take a breath before continuing. Shown by the verse circle.
مـ
waqf lāzim — وقف لازم — “Required stop” — it is absolutely necessary to stop; not stopping can change the meaning (like “Stand! not Sit!” vs “Stand not! Sit!”).
ط
waqf muṭlaq — وقف مطلق — “Absolute stop” — break the breath and voice before continuing. The sentence is not yet complete but more follows before the meaning finishes.
ج
waqf jāʾiz — وقف جائز — “Permissible stop” — better to stop here, but if you do not, that is fine.
ز
waqf mujawwaz — وقف مجوّز — It is better not to stop here.
ص
waqf murakhkhaṣ — وقف مرخّص — “Licensed pause” — continue reading; but if you are tired you may pause for a breath. More desirable to continue than at ز.

qīla ʿalayhil-waqf — قيل عليه الوقف — It has been said that it is better not to stop here — the sign marks a difference of opinion on whether to stop.

qif — قِف — “Stop!” — used where the reciter might otherwise continue instead of stopping.

saktah — سكتة — “Silence” — stop reciting but do not break the breath before continuing. Obligatory in four places (Sūrah al-Kahf, Yāsīn, al-Qiyāmah and al-Muṭaffifīn).

waqfah — وقفة — Pause here longer than at a saktah, again without breaking the breath.

— لا — “No!” — do not stop here, as it would affect the meaning. If it falls at a verse-end it is still better not to stop, but if you do the meaning is alright.

kadhālik — كذلك — “Like that” — apply the previous waqf sign at this position as well.

muʿānaqah — معانقة — “Embracing stop” — triple dots appearing in pairs: stopping at the first forbids stopping at the second (and vice versa), or the meaning becomes incomplete. Stop at one or the other, not both.
— Marks a point where there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is the end of an āyah.
waqf an-nabī ﷺ — وقف النبي ﷺ — Indicates places where the Prophet ﷺ paused.
waqf ghufrān — وقف غفران — It is said that if the reciter and listener make duʿāʾ when pausing here, it will be answered.
waqf manzil — وقف منزل — Also waqf jibrāʾīl — where Jibrīl (peace be upon him) paused at the time of revelation.
۝ Punctuation marks in the Arabic text

Qurʾanic punctuation in the Arabic script uses several symbols indicating variations in methods of qirāʾah (recitation). These symbols, known as the ʿAlāmāt al-Waqf (signs for stops), are briefly described below.

Shows the end of a verse — a pause is a must.
مـ
Waqf Lāzim — The stop at which the word and meaning give a complete sense (a “complete stop”): the utterance is complete and separated from what follows.
ط
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waqf Awlā — May or may not stop, but the first preference is to stop. (The “sufficient stop”: stopping or continuing is permissible, yet stopping is preferable, since the phrase can stand by itself.)
ج
Waqf Jāʾiz — May or may not stop at the place indicated (no preference either way).
ز
It is better not to stop here.
Breaking the voice at a Qurʾanic word for a brief moment without taking a breath — at two counts (nearly two seconds).

    اَلرَّحۡمٰنُۙ ۱

    The Most Merciful

    عَلَّمَ الۡقُرۡاٰنَؕ ۲

    Taught the Qur'an,

    خَلَقَ الۡاِنۡسَانَۙ ۳

    Created man,

    عَلَّمَهُ الۡبَيَانَ ۴

    [And] taught him eloquence.

    اَلشَّمۡسُ وَالۡقَمَرُ بِحُسۡبَانٍ ۵

    The sun and the moon [move] by precise calculation,

    وَّالنَّجۡمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسۡجُدٰنِ ۶

    And the stars and trees prostrate.

    وَالسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الۡمِيۡزَانَۙ ۷

    And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance

    اَلَّا تَطۡغَوۡا فِى الۡمِيۡزَانِ ۸

    That you not transgress within the balance.

    وَاَقِيۡمُوا الۡوَزۡنَ بِالۡقِسۡطِ وَلَا تُخۡسِرُوا الۡمِيۡزَانَ ۹

    And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance.

    وَالۡاَرۡضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلۡاَنَامِۙ ۱۰

    And the earth He laid [out] for the creatures.

    فِيۡهَا فَاكِهَةٌۙ وَّالنَّخۡلُ ذَاتُ الۡاَكۡمَامِۖ ۱۱

    Therein is fruit and palm trees having sheaths [of dates]

    وَالۡحَبُّ ذُو الۡعَصۡفِ وَالرَّيۡحَانُۚ ۱۲

    And grain having husks and scented plants.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۱۳

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

    خَلَقَ الۡاِنۡسَانَ مِنۡ صَلۡصَالٍ كَالۡفَخَّارِۙ ۱۴

    He created man from clay like [that of] pottery.

  15. 55:15

    وَخَلَقَ الۡجَآنَّ مِنۡ مَّارِجٍ مِّنۡ نَّارٍۚ ۱۵

    And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۱۶

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  17. 55:17

    رَبُّ الۡمَشۡرِقَيۡنِ وَ رَبُّ الۡمَغۡرِبَيۡنِۚ ۱۷

    [He is] Lord of the two sunrises and Lord of the two sunsets.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۱۸

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  19. 55:19

    مَرَجَ الۡبَحۡرَيۡنِ يَلۡتَقِيٰنِۙ ۱۹

    He released the two seas, meeting [side by side];

    بَيۡنَهُمَا بَرۡزَخٌ لَّا يَبۡغِيٰنِۚ ۲۰

    Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.

  21. 55:21

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۲۱

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  22. 55:22

    يَخۡرُجُ مِنۡهُمَا اللُّـؤۡلُـؤُ وَالۡمَرۡجَانُۚ ۲۲

    From both of them emerge pearl and coral.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۲۳

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  24. 55:24

    وَلَهُ الۡجَوَارِ الۡمُنۡشَئٰتُ فِى الۡبَحۡرِ كَالۡاَعۡلَامِۚ ۲۴

    And to Him belong the ships [with sails] elevated in the sea like mountains.

  25. 55:25

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۲۵

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  26. 55:26

    كُلُّ مَنۡ عَلَيۡهَا فَانٍۚۖ ۲۶

    Everyone upon the earth will perish,

  27. 55:27

    وَّيَبۡقٰى وَجۡهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الۡجَلٰلِ وَالۡاِكۡرَامِۚ ۲۷

    And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۲۸

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  29. 55:29

    يَسۡـَٔـلُهٗ مَنۡ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِؕ كُلَّ يَوۡمٍ هُوَ فِىۡ شَاۡنٍۚ ۲۹

    Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is bringing about a matter.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۳۰

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  31. 55:31

    سَنَفۡرُغُ لَـكُمۡ اَيُّهَ الثَّقَلٰنِۚ ۳۱

    We will attend to you, O prominent beings.

  32. 55:32

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۳۲

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  33. 55:33

    يٰمَعۡشَرَ الۡجِنِّ وَالۡاِنۡسِ اِنِ اسۡتَطَعۡتُمۡ اَنۡ تَنۡفُذُوۡا مِنۡ اَقۡطَارِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ فَانْفُذُوۡاؕ لَا تَنۡفُذُوۡنَ اِلَّا بِسُلۡطٰنٍۚ ۳۳

    O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority [from Allah].

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۳۴

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  35. 55:35

    يُرۡسَلُ عَلَيۡكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّنۡ نَّارٍۙ وَّنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنۡتَصِرٰنِۚ ۳۵

    There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۳۶

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  37. 55:37

    فَاِذَا انْشَقَّتِ السَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتۡ وَرۡدَةً كَالدِّهَانِۚ ۳۷

    And when the heaven is split open and becomes rose-colored like oil -

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۳۸

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

  39. 55:39

    فَيَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ لَّا يُسۡـَٔـلُ عَنۡ ذَنۡۢبِهٖۤ اِنۡسٌ وَّلَا جَآنٌّۚ ۳۹

    Then on that Day none will be asked about his sin among men or jinn.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۴۰

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  41. 55:41

    يُعۡرَفُ الۡمُجۡرِمُوۡنَ بِسِيۡمٰهُمۡ فَيُؤۡخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِىۡ وَ الۡاَقۡدَامِۚ ۴۱

    The criminals will be known by their marks, and they will be seized by the forelocks and the feet.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۴۲

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

    هٰذِهٖ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِىۡ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الۡمُجۡرِمُوۡنَۘ ۴۳

    This is Hell, which the criminals deny.

    يَطُوۡفُوۡنَ بَيۡنَهَا وَبَيۡنَ حَمِيۡمٍ اٰنٍۚ ۴۴

    They will go around between it and scalding water, heated [to the utmost degree].

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۴۵

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  46. 55:46

    وَلِمَنۡ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهٖ جَنَّتٰنِۚ ۴۶

    But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens -

  47. 55:47

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۙ ۴۷

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

  48. 55:48

    ذَوَاتَاۤ اَفۡنَانٍۚ ۴۸

    Having [spreading] branches.

  49. 55:49

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۴۹

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  50. 55:50

    فِيۡهِمَا عَيۡنٰنِ تَجۡرِيٰنِۚ ۵۰

    In both of them are two springs, flowing.

  51. 55:51

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۵۱

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  52. 55:52

    فِيۡهِمَا مِنۡ كُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ زَوۡجٰنِۚ ۵۲

    In both of them are of every fruit, two kinds.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۵۳

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  54. 55:54

    مُتَّكِـــِٕيۡنَ عَلٰى فُرُشٍۢ بَطَآٮِٕنُهَا مِنۡ اِسۡتَبۡرَقٍؕ وَجَنَی الۡجَـنَّتَيۡنِ دَانٍۚ ۵۴

    [They are] reclining on beds whose linings are of silk brocade, and the fruit of the two gardens is hanging low.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۵۵

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  56. 55:56

    فِيۡهِنَّ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرۡفِۙ لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ اِنۡسٌ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنٌّۚ ۵۶

    In them are women limiting [their] glances, untouched before them by man or jinni -

  57. 55:57

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ ۵۷

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

  58. 55:58

    كَاَنَّهُنَّ الۡيَاقُوۡتُ وَالۡمَرۡجَانُۚ ۵۸

    As if they were rubies and coral.

  59. 55:59

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۵۹

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  60. 55:60

    هَلۡ جَزَآءُ الْاِحۡسَانِ اِلَّا الۡاِحۡسَانُۚ ۶۰

    Is the reward for good [anything] but good?

  61. 55:61

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۶۱

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  62. 55:62

    وَمِنۡ دُوۡنِهِمَا جَنَّتٰنِۚ ۶۲

    And below them both [in excellence] are two [other] gardens -

  63. 55:63

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۙ ۶۳

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

  64. 55:64

    مُدۡهَآمَّتٰنِۚ ۶۴

    Dark green [in color].

  65. 55:65

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ ۶۵

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  66. 55:66

    فِيۡهِمَا عَيۡنٰنِ نَضَّاخَتٰنِۚ ۶۶

    In both of them are two springs, spouting.

  67. 55:67

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۶۷

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

    فِيۡهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّنَخۡلٌ وَّرُمَّانٌۚ ۶۸

    In both of them are fruit and palm trees and pomegranates.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ ۶۹

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

  70. 55:70

    فِيۡهِنَّ خَيۡرٰتٌ حِسَانٌۚ ۷۰

    In them are good and beautiful women -

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ ۷۱

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

  72. 55:72

    حُوۡرٌ مَّقۡصُوۡرٰتٌ فِى الۡخِيَامِۚ ۷۲

    Fair ones reserved in pavilions -

  73. 55:73

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ ۷۳

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

  74. 55:74

    لَمۡ يَطۡمِثۡهُنَّ اِنۡسٌ قَبۡلَهُمۡ وَلَا جَآنٌّۚ ۷۴

    Untouched before them by man or jinni -

  75. 55:75

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ ۷۵

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? -

    مُتَّكِــِٕيۡنَ عَلٰى رَفۡرَفٍ خُضۡرٍ وَّعَبۡقَرِىٍّ حِسَانٍۚ ۷۶

    Reclining on green cushions and beautiful fine carpets.

    فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۷۷

    So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

    تَبٰـرَكَ اسۡمُ رَبِّكَ ذِى الۡجَـلٰلِ وَالۡاِكۡرَامِ ۷۸

    Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
