ۘ Signs of waqf (pauses)

Waqf (وقف, “stop”) signs tell the reciter where to pause for breath while intending to continue. They appear slightly smaller and raised above the line. Follow them to avoid changing the meaning. Where two signs appear one above the other, give preference to the one on top.

waqf tām — وقف تامّ — “Perfect stop” — the end of a verse. The meaning is complete; stop and take a breath before continuing. Shown by the verse circle.
مـ
waqf lāzim — وقف لازم — “Required stop” — it is absolutely necessary to stop; not stopping can change the meaning (like “Stand! not Sit!” vs “Stand not! Sit!”).
ط
waqf muṭlaq — وقف مطلق — “Absolute stop” — break the breath and voice before continuing. The sentence is not yet complete but more follows before the meaning finishes.
ج
waqf jāʾiz — وقف جائز — “Permissible stop” — better to stop here, but if you do not, that is fine.
ز
waqf mujawwaz — وقف مجوّز — It is better not to stop here.
ص
waqf murakhkhaṣ — وقف مرخّص — “Licensed pause” — continue reading; but if you are tired you may pause for a breath. More desirable to continue than at ز.
صلے
al-waṣl awlā — الوصل أولى — “Continuing is preferable” — it is better to carry on reciting here.
ق
qīla ʿalayhil-waqf — قيل عليه الوقف — It has been said that it is better not to stop here — the sign marks a difference of opinion on whether to stop.
قﻲ
qad yūṣal — قد يوصل — It is better to stop here, but continuing is permissible.
قف
qif — قِف — “Stop!” — used where the reciter might otherwise continue instead of stopping.
س
saktah — سكتة — “Silence” — stop reciting but do not break the breath before continuing. Obligatory in four places (Sūrah al-Kahf, Yāsīn, al-Qiyāmah and al-Muṭaffifīn).
وقفة
waqfah — وقفة — Pause here longer than at a saktah, again without breaking the breath.
لا
— لا — “No!” — do not stop here, as it would affect the meaning. If it falls at a verse-end it is still better not to stop, but if you do the meaning is alright.
ك
kadhālik — كذلك — “Like that” — apply the previous waqf sign at this position as well.

muʿānaqah — معانقة — “Embracing stop” — triple dots appearing in pairs: stopping at the first forbids stopping at the second (and vice versa), or the meaning becomes incomplete. Stop at one or the other, not both.
— Marks a point where there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is the end of an āyah.
waqf an-nabī ﷺ — وقف النبي ﷺ — Indicates places where the Prophet ﷺ paused.
waqf ghufrān — وقف غفران — It is said that if the reciter and listener make duʿāʾ when pausing here, it will be answered.
waqf manzil — وقف منزل — Also waqf jibrāʾīl — where Jibrīl (peace be upon him) paused at the time of revelation.
۝ Punctuation marks in the Arabic text

Qurʾanic punctuation in the Arabic script uses several symbols indicating variations in methods of qirāʾah (recitation). These symbols, known as the ʿAlāmāt al-Waqf (signs for stops), are briefly described below.

Shows the end of a verse — a pause is a must.
مـ
Waqf Lāzim — The stop at which the word and meaning give a complete sense (a “complete stop”): the utterance is complete and separated from what follows.
ط
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waqf Awlā — May or may not stop, but the first preference is to stop. (The “sufficient stop”: stopping or continuing is permissible, yet stopping is preferable, since the phrase can stand by itself.)
ج
Waqf Jāʾiz — May or may not stop at the place indicated (no preference either way).
ز
It is better not to stop here.
Breaking the voice at a Qurʾanic word for a brief moment without taking a breath — at two counts (nearly two seconds).
صلے
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waṣl Awlā — May or may not stop at the place indicated, but the first preference is not to stop.
ق
It is better not to stop here.
صل
Better to stop.
قف
It is better to take a pause.
س
Stop the vocal sound for a moment without breaking the breath.
وقفة
Vocal-sound stoppage for more than a moment, without breaking the breath.
لا
Waqf Mamnūʿ — Must not stop at the place indicated.

Ramz-e-Waqf — The same waqf sign as the one that has previously passed applies here.

    الٓمّٓ ۱

    Alif, Lam, Meem.

  2. 32:2

    تَنۡزِيۡلُ الۡكِتٰبِ لَا رَيۡبَ فِيۡهِ مِنۡ رَّبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَؕ ۲

    [This is] the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds.

  3. 32:3

    اَمۡ يَقُوۡلُوۡنَ افۡتَرٰٮهُۚ بَلۡ هُوَ الۡحَقُّ مِنۡ رَّبِّكَ لِتُنۡذِرَ قَوۡمًا مَّاۤ اَتٰٮهُمۡ مِّنۡ نَّذِيۡرٍ مِّنۡ قَبۡلِكَ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَهۡتَدُوۡنَ ۳

    Or do they say, "He invented it"? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord, [O Muhammad], that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you [so] perhaps they will be guided.

    7:53 هَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا تَأْوِيلَهُۥ يَوْمَ يَأْتِى تَأْوِيلُهُۥ يَقُولُ ٱلَّذِينَ نَسُوهُ مِن قَبْلُ قَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلْحَقِّ فَهَل لَّنَا مِن شُفَعَآءَ فَيَشْفَعُوا لَنَآ أَوْ نُرَدُّ فَنَعْمَلَ غَيْرَ ٱلَّذِى كُنَّا نَعْمَلُ قَدْ خَسِرُوٓا أَنفُسَهُمْ وَضَلَّ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا يَفْتَرُونَ 10:2 أَكَانَ لِلنَّاسِ عَجَبًا أَنْ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَنْ أَنذِرِ ٱلنَّاسَ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا أَنَّ لَهُمْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ قَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَسَـٰحِرٌ مُّبِينٌ 11:6 وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رِزْقُهَا وَيَعْلَمُ مُسْتَقَرَّهَا وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا كُلٌّ فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مُّبِينٍ 25:58 وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْحَىِّ ٱلَّذِى لَا يَمُوتُ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِۦ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِيرًا 57:3 هُوَ ٱلْأَوَّلُ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرُ وَٱلظَّـٰهِرُ وَٱلْبَاطِنُ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ 6:69 وَمَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ مِنْ حِسَابِهِم مِّن شَىْءٍ وَلَـٰكِن ذِكْرَىٰ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ 6:50 قُل لَّآ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ عِندِى خَزَآئِنُ ٱللَّهِ وَلَآ أَعْلَمُ ٱلْغَيْبَ وَلَآ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ إِنِّى مَلَكٌ إِنْ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِى ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ وَٱلْبَصِيرُ أَفَلَا تَتَفَكَّرُونَ
  4. 32:4

    اَللّٰهُ الَّذِىۡ خَلَقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَهُمَا فِىۡ سِتَّةِ اَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسۡتَوٰى عَلَى الۡعَرۡشِؕ مَا لَكُمۡ مِّنۡ دُوۡنِهٖ مِنۡ وَّلِىٍّ وَّلَا شَفِيۡعٍؕ اَفَلَا تَتَذَكَّرُوۡنَ ۴

    It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days; then He established Himself above the Throne. You have not besides Him any protector or any intercessor; so will you not be reminded?

  5. 32:5

    يُدَبِّرُ الۡاَمۡرَ مِنَ السَّمَآءِ اِلَى الۡاَرۡضِ ثُمَّ يَعۡرُجُ اِلَيۡهِ فِىۡ يَوۡمٍ كَانَ مِقۡدَارُهٗۤ اَلۡفَ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّوۡنَ ۵

    He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.

  6. 32:6

    ذٰلِكَ عٰلِمُ الۡغَيۡبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الرَّحِيۡمُۙ ۶

    That is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

  7. 32:7

    الَّذِىۡۤ اَحۡسَنَ كُلَّ شَىۡءٍ خَلَقَهٗ وَبَدَاَ خَلۡقَ الۡاِنۡسَانِ مِنۡ طِيۡنٍۚ ۷

    Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.

  8. 32:8

    ثُمَّ جَعَلَ نَسۡلَهٗ مِنۡ سُلٰلَةٍ مِّنۡ مَّآءٍ مَّهِيۡنٍۚ ۸

    Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.

  9. 32:9

    ثُمَّ سَوّٰٮهُ وَنَفَخَ فِيۡهِ مِنۡ رُّوۡحِهٖ وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمۡعَ وَالۡاَبۡصَارَ وَالۡاَفۡـــِٕدَةَ ؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَشۡكُرُوۡنَ ۹

    Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul and made for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful.

  10. 32:10

    وَقَالُوۡٓا ءَاِذَا ضَلَلۡنَا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ ءَاِنَّا لَفِىۡ خَلۡقٍ جَدِيۡدٍؕ بَلۡ هُمۡ بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّهِمۡ كٰفِرُوۡنَ ۱۰

    And they say, "When we are lost within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?" Rather, they are, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers.

  11. 32:11

    ۞ قُلۡ يَتَوَفّٰٮكُمۡ مَّلَكُ الۡمَوۡتِ الَّذِىۡ وُكِّلَ بِكُمۡ ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكُمۡ تُرۡجَعُوۡنَ ۱۱

    Say, "The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."

  12. 32:12

    وَلَوۡ تَرٰٓى اِذِ الۡمُجۡرِمُوۡنَ نَاكِسُوۡا رُءُوۡسِهِمۡ عِنۡدَ رَبِّهِمۡ رَبَّنَاۤ اَبۡصَرۡنَا وَسَمِعۡنَا فَارۡجِعۡنَا نَعۡمَلۡ صَالِحًـا اِنَّا مُوۡقِنُوۡنَ ۱۲

    If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain."

  13. 32:13

    وَ لَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَاٰتَيۡنَا كُلَّ نَفۡسٍ هُدٰٮهَا وَلٰـكِنۡ حَقَّ الۡقَوۡلُ مِنِّىۡ لَاَمۡلَئَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ الۡجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ اَجۡمَعِيۡنَ ۱۳

    And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word from Me will come into effect [that] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together.

  14. 32:14

    فَذُوۡقُوۡا بِمَا نَسِيۡتُمۡ لِقَآءَ يَوۡمِكُمۡ هٰذَاۚ اِنَّا نَسِيۡنٰكُمۡ وَذُوۡقُوۡا عَذَابَ الۡخُلۡدِ بِمَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ۱۴

    So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do."

  15. 32:15

    اِنَّمَا يُؤۡمِنُ بِاٰيٰتِنَا الَّذِيۡنَ اِذَا ذُكِّرُوۡا بِهَا خَرُّوۡا سُجَّدًا وَّسَبَّحُوۡا بِحَمۡدِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَهُمۡ لَا يَسۡتَكۡبِرُوۡنَ ۩ ۱۵

    Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.

  16. 32:16

    تَتَجَافٰى جُنُوۡبُهُمۡ عَنِ الۡمَضَاجِعِ يَدۡعُوۡنَ رَبَّهُمۡ خَوۡفًا وَّطَمَعًا وَّمِمَّا رَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ يُنۡفِقُوۡنَ ۱۶

    They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.

  17. 32:17

    فَلَا تَعۡلَمُ نَفۡسٌ مَّاۤ اُخۡفِىَ لَهُمۡ مِّنۡ قُرَّةِ اَعۡيُنٍۚ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ۱۷

    And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.

  18. 32:18

    اَفَمَنۡ كَانَ مُؤۡمِنًا كَمَنۡ كَانَ فَاسِقًا ؕ لَا يَسۡتَوٗنَ ۱۸

    Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.

  19. 32:19

    اَمَّا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ فَلَهُمۡ جَنّٰتُ الۡمَاۡوٰى نُزُلًاۢ بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ۱۹

    As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.

  20. 32:20

    وَاَمَّا الَّذِيۡنَ فَسَقُوۡا فَمَاۡوٰٮهُمُ النَّارُؕ كُلَّمَاۤ اَرَادُوۡۤا اَنۡ يَّخۡرُجُوۡا مِنۡهَاۤ اُعِيۡدُوۡا فِيۡهَا وَ قِيۡلَ لَهُمۡ ذُوۡقُوۡا عَذَابَ النَّارِ الَّذِىۡ كُنۡتُمۡ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوۡنَ ۲۰

    But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."

  21. 32:21

    وَلَنـــُذِيۡقَنَّهُمۡ مِّنَ الۡعَذَابِ الۡاَدۡنٰى دُوۡنَ الۡعَذَابِ الۡاَكۡبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُوۡنَ ۲۱

    And we will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent.

  22. 32:22

    وَمَنۡ اَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنۡ ذُكِّرَ بِاٰيٰتِ رَبِّهٖ ثُمَّ اَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهَاؕ اِنَّا مِنَ الۡمُجۡرِمِيۡنَ مُنۡتَقِمُوۡنَ ۲۲

    And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.

  23. 32:23

    وَلَقَدۡ اٰتَيۡنَا مُوۡسَى الۡكِتٰبَ فَلَا تَكُنۡ فِىۡ مِرۡيَةٍ مِّنۡ لِّقَآٮِٕهٖ وَجَعَلۡنٰهُ هُدًى لِّبَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَۚ ۲۳

    And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting. And we made the Torah guidance for the Children of Israel.

  24. 32:24

    وَ جَعَلۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡ اَٮِٕمَّةً يَّهۡدُوۡنَ بِاَمۡرِنَا لَمَّا صَبَرُوۡا ؕ وَ كَانُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِنَا يُوۡقِنُوۡنَ ۲۴

    And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.

  25. 32:25

    اِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَفۡصِلُ بَيۡنَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ الۡقِيٰمَةِ فِيۡمَا كَانُوۡا فِيۡهِ يَخۡتَلِفُوۡنَ ۲۵

    Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.

  26. 32:26

    اَوَلَمۡ يَهۡدِ لَهُمۡ كَمۡ اَهۡلَكۡنَا مِنۡ قَبۡلِهِمۡ مِّنَ الۡقُرُوۡنِ يَمۡشُوۡنَ فِىۡ مَسٰكِنِهِمۡ ؕ اِنَّ فِىۡ ذٰ لِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ ؕ اَفَلَا يَسۡمَعُوۡنَ ۲۶

    Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear?

  27. 32:27

    اَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡا اَنَّا نَسُوۡقُ الۡمَآءَ اِلَى الۡاَرۡضِ الۡجُرُزِ فَنُخۡرِجُ بِهٖ زَرۡعًا تَاۡكُلُ مِنۡهُ اَنۡعَامُهُمۡ وَاَنۡفُسُهُمۡؕ اَفَلَا يُبۡصِرُوۡنَ ۲۷

    Have they not seen that We drive the water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?

  28. 32:28

    وَيَقُوۡلُوۡنَ مَتٰى هٰذَا الۡفَتۡحُ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ ۲۸

    And they say, "When will be this conquest, if you should be truthful?"

  29. 32:29

    قُلۡ يَوۡمَ الۡفَتۡحِ لَا يَنۡفَعُ الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اِيۡمَانُهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يُنۡظَرُوۡنَ ۲۹

    So turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.
