ۘ Signs of waqf (pauses)

Waqf (وقف, “stop”) signs tell the reciter where to pause for breath while intending to continue. They appear slightly smaller and raised above the line. Follow them to avoid changing the meaning. Where two signs appear one above the other, give preference to the one on top.

waqf tām — وقف تامّ — “Perfect stop” — the end of a verse. The meaning is complete; stop and take a breath before continuing. Shown by the verse circle.
مـ
waqf lāzim — وقف لازم — “Required stop” — it is absolutely necessary to stop; not stopping can change the meaning (like “Stand! not Sit!” vs “Stand not! Sit!”).
ط
waqf muṭlaq — وقف مطلق — “Absolute stop” — break the breath and voice before continuing. The sentence is not yet complete but more follows before the meaning finishes.
ج
waqf jāʾiz — وقف جائز — “Permissible stop” — better to stop here, but if you do not, that is fine.
ز
waqf mujawwaz — وقف مجوّز — It is better not to stop here.
ص
waqf murakhkhaṣ — وقف مرخّص — “Licensed pause” — continue reading; but if you are tired you may pause for a breath. More desirable to continue than at ز.
صلے
al-waṣl awlā — الوصل أولى — “Continuing is preferable” — it is better to carry on reciting here.
ق
qīla ʿalayhil-waqf — قيل عليه الوقف — It has been said that it is better not to stop here — the sign marks a difference of opinion on whether to stop.
قﻲ
qad yūṣal — قد يوصل — It is better to stop here, but continuing is permissible.
قف
qif — قِف — “Stop!” — used where the reciter might otherwise continue instead of stopping.
س
saktah — سكتة — “Silence” — stop reciting but do not break the breath before continuing. Obligatory in four places (Sūrah al-Kahf, Yāsīn, al-Qiyāmah and al-Muṭaffifīn).
وقفة
waqfah — وقفة — Pause here longer than at a saktah, again without breaking the breath.
لا
— لا — “No!” — do not stop here, as it would affect the meaning. If it falls at a verse-end it is still better not to stop, but if you do the meaning is alright.
ك
kadhālik — كذلك — “Like that” — apply the previous waqf sign at this position as well.

muʿānaqah — معانقة — “Embracing stop” — triple dots appearing in pairs: stopping at the first forbids stopping at the second (and vice versa), or the meaning becomes incomplete. Stop at one or the other, not both.
— Marks a point where there is a difference of opinion as to whether it is the end of an āyah.
waqf an-nabī ﷺ — وقف النبي ﷺ — Indicates places where the Prophet ﷺ paused.
waqf ghufrān — وقف غفران — It is said that if the reciter and listener make duʿāʾ when pausing here, it will be answered.
waqf manzil — وقف منزل — Also waqf jibrāʾīl — where Jibrīl (peace be upon him) paused at the time of revelation.
۝ Punctuation marks in the Arabic text

Qurʾanic punctuation in the Arabic script uses several symbols indicating variations in methods of qirāʾah (recitation). These symbols, known as the ʿAlāmāt al-Waqf (signs for stops), are briefly described below.

Shows the end of a verse — a pause is a must.
مـ
Waqf Lāzim — The stop at which the word and meaning give a complete sense (a “complete stop”): the utterance is complete and separated from what follows.
ط
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waqf Awlā — May or may not stop, but the first preference is to stop. (The “sufficient stop”: stopping or continuing is permissible, yet stopping is preferable, since the phrase can stand by itself.)
ج
Waqf Jāʾiz — May or may not stop at the place indicated (no preference either way).
ز
It is better not to stop here.
Breaking the voice at a Qurʾanic word for a brief moment without taking a breath — at two counts (nearly two seconds).
صلے
Waqf Jāʾiz, al-Waṣl Awlā — May or may not stop at the place indicated, but the first preference is not to stop.
ق
It is better not to stop here.
صل
Better to stop.
قف
It is better to take a pause.
س
Stop the vocal sound for a moment without breaking the breath.

  1. 45:1

    حٰمٓۚ ۱

    Ha, Meem.

  2. 45:2

    تَنۡزِيۡلُ الۡكِتٰبِ مِنَ اللّٰهِ الۡعَزِيۡزِ الۡحَكِيۡمِ ۲

    The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

  3. 45:3

    اِنَّ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَؕ ۳

    Indeed, within the heavens and earth are signs for the believers.

  4. 45:4

    وَفِىۡ خَلۡقِكُمۡ وَمَا يَبُثُّ مِنۡ دَآبَّةٍ اٰيٰتٌ لِّقَوۡمٍ يُّوۡقِنُوۡنَۙ ۴

    And in the creation of yourselves and what He disperses of moving creatures are signs for people who are certain [in faith].

  5. 45:5

    وَاخۡتِلَافِ الَّيۡلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَمَاۤ اَنۡزَلَ اللّٰهُ مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مِنۡ رِّزۡقٍ فَاَحۡيَا بِهِ الۡاَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَا وَ تَصۡرِيۡفِ الرِّيٰحِ اٰيٰتٌ لِّقَوۡمٍ يَّعۡقِلُوۡنَ ۵

    And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason.

  6. 45:6

    تِلۡكَ اٰيٰتُ اللّٰهِ نَـتۡلُوۡهَا عَلَيۡكَ بِالۡحَقِّۚ فَبِاَىِّ حَدِيۡثٍۢ بَعۡدَ اللّٰهِ وَاٰيٰتِهٖ يُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ۶

    These are the verses of Allah which We recite to you in truth. Then in what statement after Allah and His verses will they believe?

  7. 45:7

    وَيۡلٌ لِّـكُلِّ اَفَّاكٍ اَثِيۡمٍۙ ۷

    Woe to every sinful liar

  8. 45:8

    يَّسۡمَعُ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ تُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡهِ ثُمَّ يُصِرُّ مُسۡتَكۡبِرًا كَاَنۡ لَّمۡ يَسۡمَعۡهَاۚ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ اَ لِيۡمٍ ۸

    Who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment.

  9. 45:9

    وَاِذَا عَلِمَ مِنۡ اٰيٰتِنَا شَيۡــًٔـا اۨتَّخَذَهَا هُزُوًا ؕ اُولٰٓٮِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ مُّهِيۡنٌؕ ۹

    And when he knows anything of Our verses, he takes them in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment.

  10. 45:10

    مِنۡ وَّرَآٮِٕهِمۡ جَهَنَّمُۚ وَلَا يُغۡنِىۡ عَنۡهُمۡ مَّا كَسَبُوۡا شَيۡــًٔـا وَّلَا مَا اتَّخَذُوۡا مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰهِ اَوۡلِيَآءَۚ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ عَظِيۡمٌؕ ۱۰

    Before them is Hell, and what they had earned will not avail them at all nor what they had taken besides Allah as allies. And they will have a great punishment.

  11. 45:11

    هٰذَا هُدًىۚ وَالَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡا بِاٰيٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ مِّنۡ رِّجۡزٍ اَلِيۡمٌ ۱۱

    This [Qur'an] is guidance. And those who have disbelieved in the verses of their Lord will have a painful punishment of foul nature.

  12. 45:12

    ۞ اَللّٰهُ الَّذِىۡ سَخَّرَ لَـكُمُ الۡبَحۡرَ لِتَجۡرِىَ الۡفُلۡكُ فِيۡهِ بِاَمۡرِهٖ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوۡا مِنۡ فَضۡلِهٖ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُوۡنَۚ ۱۲

    It is Allah who subjected to you the sea so that ships may sail upon it by His command and that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.

  13. 45:13

    وَسَخَّرَ لَـكُمۡ مَّا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الۡاَرۡضِ جَمِيۡعًا مِّنۡهُ ؕ اِنَّ فِىۡ ذٰ لِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوۡمٍ يَّتَفَكَّرُوۡنَ ۱۳

    And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth - all from Him. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

  14. 45:14

    قُلْ لِّلَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا يَغۡفِرُوۡا لِلَّذِيۡنَ لَا يَرۡجُوۡنَ اَيَّامَ اللّٰهِ لِيَجۡزِىَ قَوۡمًۢا بِمَا كَانُوۡا يَكۡسِبُوۡنَ ۱۴

    Say, [O Muhammad], to those who have believed that they [should] forgive those who expect not the days of Allah so that He may recompense a people for what they used to earn.

  15. 45:15

    مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَالِحًـا فَلِنَفۡسِهٖۚ وَمَنۡ اَسَآءَ فَعَلَيۡهَا ثُمَّ اِلٰى رَبِّكُمۡ تُرۡجَعُوۡنَ ۱۵

    Whoever does a good deed - it is for himself; and whoever does evil - it is against the self. Then to your Lord you will be returned.

  16. 45:16

    وَلَقَدۡ اٰتَيۡنَا بَنِىۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِيۡلَ الۡكِتٰبَ وَالۡحُكۡمَ وَالنُّبُوَّةَ وَرَزَقۡنٰهُمۡ مِّنَ الطَّيِّبٰتِ وَفَضَّلۡنٰهُمۡ عَلَى الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَۚ ۱۶

    And We did certainly give the Children of Israel the Scripture and judgement and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and preferred them over the worlds.

  17. 45:17

    وَاٰتَيۡنٰهُمۡ بَيِّنٰتٍ مِّنَ الۡاَمۡرِۚ فَمَا اخۡتَلَفُوۡۤا اِلَّا مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَهُمُ الۡعِلۡمُۙ بَغۡيًاۢ بَيۡنَهُمۡؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقۡضِىۡ بَيۡنَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ الۡقِيٰمَةِ فِيۡمَا كَانُوۡا فِيۡهِ يَخۡتَلِفُوۡنَ ۱۷

    And We gave them clear proofs of the matter [of religion]. And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.

  18. 45:18

    ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنٰكَ عَلٰى شَرِيۡعَةٍ مِّنَ الۡاَمۡرِ فَاتَّبِعۡهَا وَلَا تَتَّبِعۡ اَهۡوَآءَ الَّذِيۡنَ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۱۸

    Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it and do not follow the inclinations of those who do not know.

  19. 45:19

    اِنَّهُمۡ لَنۡ يُّغۡنُوۡا عَنۡكَ مِنَ اللّٰهِ شَيۡــًٔـا ؕ وَ اِنَّ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ اَوۡلِيَآءُ بَعۡضٍۚ وَاللّٰهُ وَلِىُّ الۡمُتَّقِيۡنَ ۱۹

    Indeed, they will never avail you against Allah at all. And indeed, the wrongdoers are allies of one another; but Allah is the protector of the righteous.

  20. 45:20

    هٰذَا بَصَاٮِٕرُ لِلنَّاسِ وَهُدًى وَّرَحۡمَةٌ لِّقَوۡمٍ يُّوۡقِنُوۡنَ ۲۰

    This [Qur'an] is enlightenment for mankind and guidance and mercy for a people who are certain [in faith].

  21. 45:21

    اَمۡ حَسِبَ الَّذِيۡنَ اجۡتَـرَحُوا السَّيِّاٰتِ اَنۡ نَّجۡعَلَهُمۡ كَالَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِۙ سَوَآءً مَّحۡيَاهُمۡ وَمَمَاتُهُمۡ ؕ سَآءَ مَا يَحۡكُمُوۡنَ ۲۱

    Or do those who commit evils think We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds - [make them] equal in their life and their death? Evil is that which they judge.

  22. 45:22

    وَ خَلَقَ اللّٰهُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ بِالۡحَقِّ وَلِتُجۡزٰى كُلُّ نَفۡسٍۢ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ وَهُمۡ لَا يُظۡلَمُوۡنَ ۲۲

    And Allah created the heavens and earth in truth and so that every soul may be recompensed for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.

  23. 45:23

    اَفَرَءَيۡتَ مَنِ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰهَهٗ هَوٰٮهُ وَاَضَلَّهُ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى عِلۡمٍ وَّخَتَمَ عَلٰى سَمۡعِهٖ وَقَلۡبِهٖ وَجَعَلَ عَلٰى بَصَرِهٖ غِشٰوَةً ؕ فَمَنۡ يَّهۡدِيۡهِ مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ اللّٰهِ ؕ اَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ ۲۳

    Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?

  24. 45:24

    وَقَالُوۡا مَا هِىَ اِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنۡيَا نَمُوۡتُ وَنَحۡيَا وَمَا يُهۡلِكُنَاۤ اِلَّا الدَّهۡرُؕ وَمَا لَهُمۡ بِذٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۚ اِنۡ هُمۡ اِلَّا يَظُنُّوۡنَ ۲۴

    And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming.

    8:30 وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَ وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ ٱللَّهُ وَٱللَّهُ خَيْرُ ٱلْمَـٰكِرِينَ 10:14 ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ خَلَـٰٓئِفَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِن بَعْدِهِمْ لِنَنظُرَ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ 19:72 ثُمَّ نُنَجِّى ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا وَّنَذَرُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا 22:71 وَيَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِۦ سُلْطَـٰنًا وَمَا لَيْسَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَمَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ مِن نَّصِيرٍ 31:6 وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشْتَرِى لَهْوَ ٱلْحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًا أُولَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ 34:42 فَٱلْيَوْمَ لَا يَمْلِكُ بَعْضُكُمْ لِبَعْضٍ نَّفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا وَنَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا ذُوقُوا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ٱلَّتِى كُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ 46:6 وَإِذَا حُشِرَ ٱلنَّاسُ كَانُوا لَهُمْ أَعْدَآءً وَكَانُوا بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ كَـٰفِرِينَ
  25. 45:25

    وَاِذَا تُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡهِمۡ اٰيٰتُنَا بَيِّنٰتٍ مَّا كَانَ حُجَّتَهُمۡ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ قَالُوا ائۡتُوۡا بِاٰبَآٮِٕنَاۤ اِنۡ كُنۡتُمۡ صٰدِقِيۡنَ ۲۵

    And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, their argument is only that they say, "Bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."

  26. 45:26

    قُلِ اللّٰهُ يُحۡيِيۡكُمۡ ثُمَّ يُمِيۡتُكُمۡ ثُمَّ يَجۡمَعُكُمۡ اِلٰى يَوۡمِ الۡقِيٰمَةِ لَا رَيۡبَ فِيۡهِ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكۡثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۲۶

    Say, "Allah causes you to live, then causes you to die; then He will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt, but most of the people do not know."

  27. 45:27

    وَلِلّٰهِ مُلۡكُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِؕ وَيَوۡمَ تَقُوۡمُ السَّاعَةُ يَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ يَّخۡسَرُ الۡمُبۡطِلُوۡنَ ۲۷

    And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And the Day the Hour appears - that Day the falsifiers will lose.

  28. 45:28

    وَتَرٰى كُلَّ اُمَّةٍ جَاثِيَةً كُلُّ اُمَّةٍ تُدۡعٰۤى اِلٰى كِتٰبِهَا ؕ اَلۡيَوۡمَ تُجۡزَوۡنَ مَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ۲۸

    And you will see every nation kneeling [from fear]. Every nation will be called to its record [and told], "Today you will be recompensed for what you used to do.

  29. 45:29

    هٰذَا كِتٰبُنَا يَنۡطِقُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ بِالۡحَقِّؕ اِنَّا كُنَّا نَسۡتَنۡسِخُ مَا كُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ۲۹

    This, Our record, speaks about you in truth. Indeed, We were having transcribed whatever you used to do."

  30. 45:30

    فَاَمَّا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ فَيُدۡخِلُهُمۡ رَبُّهُمۡ فِىۡ رَحۡمَتِهٖ ؕ ذٰ لِكَ هُوَ الۡفَوۡزُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ ۳۰

    So as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is what is the clear attainment.

  31. 45:31

    وَاَمَّا الَّذِيۡنَ كَفَرُوۡۤا اَفَلَمۡ تَكُنۡ اٰيٰتِىۡ تُتۡلٰى عَلَيۡكُمۡ فَاسۡتَكۡبَرۡتُمۡ وَكُنۡتُمۡ قَوۡمًا مُّجۡرِمِيۡنَ ۳۱

    But as for those who disbelieved, [it will be said], "Were not Our verses recited to you, but you were arrogant and became a people of criminals?

  32. 45:32

    وَاِذَا قِيۡلَ اِنَّ وَعۡدَ اللّٰهِ حَقٌّ وَّالسَّاعَةُ لَا رَيۡبَ فِيۡهَا قُلۡتُمۡ مَّا نَدۡرِىۡ مَا السَّاعَةُۙ اِنۡ نَّـظُنُّ اِلَّا ظَنًّا وَّمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُسۡتَيۡقِنِيۡنَ ۳۲

    And when it was said, 'Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth and the Hour [is coming] - no doubt about it,' you said, 'We know not what is the Hour. We assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.' "

  33. 45:33

    وَبَدَا لَهُمۡ سَيِّاٰتُ مَا عَمِلُوۡا وَحَاقَ بِهِمۡ مَّا كَانُوۡا بِهٖ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُوۡنَ ۳۳

    And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

  34. 45:34

    وَقِيۡلَ الۡيَوۡمَ نَنۡسٰٮكُمۡ كَمَا نَسِيۡتُمۡ لِقَآءَ يَوۡمِكُمۡ هٰذَا وَمَاۡوٰٮكُمُ النَّارُ وَمَا لَـكُمۡ مِّنۡ نّٰصِرِيۡنَ ۳۴

    And it will be said, "Today We will forget you as you forgot the meeting of this Day of yours, and your refuge is the Fire, and for you there are no helpers.

  35. 45:35

    ذٰلِكُمۡ بِاَنَّكُمُ اتَّخَذۡتُمۡ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ هُزُوًا وَّغَرَّتۡكُمُ الۡحَيٰوةُ الدُّنۡيَاۚ فَالۡيَوۡمَ لَا يُخۡرَجُوۡنَ مِنۡهَا وَلَا هُمۡ يُسۡتَعۡتَبُوۡنَ ۳۵

    That is because you took the verses of Allah in ridicule, and worldly life deluded you." So that Day they will not be removed from it, nor will they be asked to appease [Allah].

  36. 45:36

    فَلِلّٰهِ الۡحَمۡدُ رَبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَرَبِّ الۡاَرۡضِ رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِيۡنَ ۳۶

    Then, to Allah belongs [all] praise - Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the worlds.

  37. 45:37

    وَلَهُ الۡكِبۡرِيَآءُ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضِ وَهُوَ الۡعَزِيۡزُ الۡحَكِيۡمُ ۳۷

    And to Him belongs [all] grandeur within the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
